Doubt that it would actually happen like this, but for a bit of variation!
Jim slumped into the hall where they were holding Luke and Kerry�s engagement party. He was there solely by obligation, in fact, right now there was nowhere else he would least rather be. Or actually, on second thoughts being stuck in a confined space with Tony Stamp would be far worse. How he had wanted to hit him as he had gone on and on about how June didn�t really love him and how she was ashamed of him. He knew that it wasn�t true, he knew that June loved him, deep down, but there was always that doubt which swept across him, just why really didn�t she want it to be made public? Why couldn�t he get rid of these insecurities?
He looked up to observe several of his colleagues skilfully (or in the case of Reg, quite disastrously) putting up decorations, a huge banner reading �Congratulations� which draped from one side of the hall to the other. �Congratulations, huh!� thought Jim to himself. �Why do some people get all the luck? Kerry and Luke have known each other five minutes and they are getting engaged, and June and I, well, she wont even tell me that she loves me��
�Jim, stop daydreaming!�
�What? Oh,� Jim turned around to see who was addressing him and was met with Cass� cheeky grin. �Cass, hi sorry, was miles away there. This place is looking great.�
�Yeah, well we have spent long enough doing it, and knowing Luke and Kerry they will be too wrapped up in each other to even notice!�
Jim didn�t respond to this, and simply looked down to the ground, a sudden surge of sadness coming over him.
�Cheer up Jim, you didn�t want Kerry yourself did you?!�
Jim gave a half laugh. �No, of course not. Just got to get something from my car quickly, back in a second.�
Cass watched Jim as he retreated quickly away and shook her head. What was with him these days? One minute he was really cheerful and the next really subdued. She shook her head again and returned back to the others.
Jim reached his car and slipped inside and rested his head against the steering wheel. He felt tears welling up in his eyes and wiped at them quickly. How could being in love be so wonderful but so destructive at the same time? What he would do to show his love to June as openly as Kerry and Luke showed their love for each other. In fact, there was nothing he would rather do than tell the whole world that he loved her � that he loved her more than anyone else he had ever known. OK, so at the time he had agreed to keep things quiet, for her careers sake, but� He paused in his thoughts as he heard a banging on his window and looked up to see June smiling in at him.
�June, can you get in the car a minute, I really need to talk to you,� he pleaded, winding down his window.
�Jim, I don�t know,� replied June looking agitated, �Ok, just for a minute.�
�So what�s up?� enquired June as she clambered in beside him.
�Its, well, I know that we have talked about this before and you, well� I mean��
�You want us to go public,� finished June; aware of how he was struggling with his words.
�Well, yeah� how do you always know what I am thinking?� asked Jim with a twinkle in his eye, trying to relax the conversation.
�How long have I known you Jim Carver, it would be worrying if I didn�t.� replied June, squeezing his arm. �I heard what Tony was saying to you earlier.�
�You did?�
�Yeah,� said June sighing, �I really don�t understand what has happened to him lately. I thought he meant it when he said that he wanted to make up with you. To be honest Jim I think he is jealous of you.�
�Jealous?�
�He sort of suggested that he was attracted to me.�
�He did what?� Gasped Jim, his eyes flaring up with anger.
�Be easy on him Jim, he has had a tough time lately with the Dwyer situation, and although he wouldn�t admit it, I think the situation with Polly really hurt him. Then suddenly you end up with me in a happy, stable relationship, what he has always wanted. It�s understandable, not excusable, but understandable.�
�Yeah, I guess you�re right,� sighed Jim, leaning back against the drivers seat. �I just wish things weren�t so complicated.�
�I know,� said June softly, stroking his arm, �so lets make it less complicated.�
�How do you mean?� asked Jim, taking her hand in his.
�You are right, we can�t carry on like this, keeping it secret. I am with you, and I want the world to know it.�
�You serious?� asked Jim, with more than a hint of enthusiasm.
June laughed. �Yes, of course, I think this would be the perfect occasion to come clean.�
�I think I am inclined to agree with you there,� responded Jim, his eyes dancing with excitement.
He reached forward and kissed her, she kissed him back, he went to deepen the kiss but she pulled away, holding her finger to his lips.
�Later Jim, late,� she laughed as he raised his eyebrows at her and moved to open the car door.
They made their way to the hall and it became apparent that the party had already begun, music was blaring down the corridor and they could hear people laughing and joking. June took Jim�s hand and gave it a gentle squeeze.
�So what, are we going to go in there as a couple now?�
�I am guessing so Jim,� replied June nervously
�June, there you are good.� They both looked up to see Matt Boyden walking towards them.
�June, I need you to do a couple of announcements, they are written here, and here�s the microphone. Sorry I cant do it myself, emergency, will be back in a second.�
�But...� protested June and then watched as Matt raced away from them. �Typical � had better do this and then we can get back to being a couple.� She said smiling at him.
�Sounds good to me,� grinned Jim.
They made their way into the hall and June set towards the stage to make the announcements. She jumped as someone taped her on the shoulder. She turned to see a rather drunk looking Tony grinning down at her.
�Tony, you scared me!�
�Sorry June, listen, can I have a word?�
�Not now Tony, I have to make these announcements quickly.�
Tony was too drunk to be reasoned with however, and dragged her to a small room behind the stage.
�Ok,� sighed June, �what�s up Tony?�
She looked up and then froze in amazement as Tony leaned in to kiss her.
�Tony, what are you doing?�
�Come on June,� chuckled Tony, swaying slightly due to the quantity of alcohol he had consumed. �You and I could be good together.�
�No, you have to stop this Tony, you need to understand,� said June, reaching out to touch his arm, and unknowingly to her, turning the microphone on. �I am with Jim, I love him, I always have loved him in a strange way I guess, this is the real thing for me, and I want to spend the rest of my life with him.�
June turned quickly and made her way back into the hall, and was met with a loud cheer, and a very red faced Jim.
She looked around her in confusion, �What�s going on Jim?� she enquired. Jim reached for the microphone and held it up, indicating that it was on. June gasped, �How much did they hear?� She groaned, running her hand through her hair.
�Just your declaration of love for me, I know you wanted to tell everyone, but you could have warned me in advance.� Chuckled Jim.
�So it�s true then, you two�wow, this is amazing, isn�t it Nick?� Jim and June looked up to see a beaming Cass looking at them, and a very curious Nick who was obviously still trying to weigh up the situation.
�Well, I think it�s great, you two are made for each other.� Said Cass skipping off with Nick in tow.
June stole a quick look around her. �Everyone�s looking aren�t they?� questioned June. �Yep, pretty much,� replied Jim, rather nervously.
�In that case I think we had better give them something to look at!�
Jim turned to her quickly, shocked at what he had just heard. �You sure?�
�Absolutely!�
June took Jim in her arms and started to dance with him. After a while she found his lips and started to kiss him gently. Others in the room looked on in astonishment, but by this point Jim and June were so lost in each other that they failed to even notice�
