Scriptural Music

SCRIPTURAL MUSIC

INDEXED

By RICHARD C. AVERITT

The author has been a lifetime flutist and craftsman member of the Piano Technicians Guild. He majored in Greek in College, has his Masters in Biblical Literature, and took other advanced studies including Hebrew. He has authored the Topical Bible Commentary, a Singular-Meaning Lexicon and Handbook of the Greek NT, The Last Christian on Earth and Scriptural Music. The family is all musically inclined. Thus, his lifetime experience in music, the art of piano craftsmanship, Bible languages and directing church choirs are combined to produce this writing.

THREE AREAS of study make this book unique.

One area considers the scientific and arithmetic makeup of musical sound. God formed music with a harmonic arrangement, built on numbered vibrations per second. These are demonstrated in the tuning of a piano, where intervals are tuned to predetermined harmonic relations. When music ignores these tonal principles, it digresses to dissonant sounds and even noise.

A second factor needing consideration is the innateness of musical structure in the mind. Some writers judge that at the time of birth, music is a little more innate (95%} than language (85%). Science has converted chemical formulas for living cells into orderly patterns of music. Some so-called music conflicts with this God-given innateness.

A third area needing more in-put was to approach the subject from the standpoint of Hebrew and Greek meanings. The writer assumes that God speaks clearly in the important matter of music, as in other theological questions. Especially treated was the Hebrew study of the words in the hymnbook of the Bible, the Psalms.

Guidelines to control music are presented in the Summary.
