Tips for Navigating the Airport in Guangzhou, compliments of Teresa Hill, Sept. '99 dtc'er

Get Yuan in advance or at airport from the non-gray money exchangers On the International flight, inform flight attendants of connnection--put destination stickers on clothes.   As you get off the Int'l flight, check baggage to next destination at a CS desk -they're wearing pink jackets right outside the deplaning area after checkpoints Get luggage...pass customs   Go downstairs...Exit International terminal (go outside, turn right, go next door, name on bldg. in English)   Enter the Domestic terminal building Check-in  (now or after airport tax & security?)   Go upstairs and pay airport tax in roped off area (50 Yuan p.p.-domestic flight).   Go through security   Go to upstairs waiting area (orange chairs) and to large marquee board of departing flight info.  (announced in English)   Proceed downstairs to your gate and another large waiting area   From the gate, you will board a shuttle that takes you to the foot of the plane.

OK, now a friend on another list provided better details.  Since she posted elsewhere, I will not use her name, although she deserves the credit!  Here's what she wrote:

Hi all, Teresa's post on the Guangzhou will be very useful for those who will need to transfer without the benefit of a guide. Having just been there a month ago, I thought I'd post our process, since it is slightly different than Teresa's post. For example, we never were upstairs in the international terminal.   I had printed a post from APC on the subject and without it would have felt lost once inside the domestic terminal. Before you get there, be prepared for anything. Be prepared to have to show that coveted passport at numerous stations. Be prepared for people who will push and shove to take care of themselves, even if you are next in line. I was often advising my travel-mates "this is not a time to be polite". There are times that you have to "do as the Chinese do" or you will be trampled over in their haste to go about their day. With that, here's our version of the Guangzhou airport.....

When we informed the flight attendant of our connection, they told us to check with the China Southern rep once we had deplaned. After deplaning (and a short bus ride from the plane to the terminal) you'll go through the quarantine checkpoint and then customs and immigration. After that there was a small podium with a flight China Southern employee there (yes, pink jacket). We told him of our connecting flight, he told another employee who then came and found us as we waited for our luggage.

After you get your baggage and go through baggage claim (keep those baggage claim tickets to show), go out into the lobby of the international terminal.   You will go to the China Southern Flight Transfer Desk. The employee who had found us earlier was there and took care of us. We never went up to the desk, we gave her our tickets, she went to the desk, got us our boarding passes and brought them back to us. The luggage goes to a roped off area and eventually it is taken to your connecting flight. You will feel like you may never see that luggage again.

After all that, in the same terminal, go to the bank or money exchange machine and get some Chinese money (yuan), don't exchange money with the gray market guys roaming the floor area.   Next, exit International terminal (go outside) and enter the Domestic terminal building (next building on the right, the sign outside is in English)...go upstairs and to the right and pay airport construction tax (50 Yuan/person)...go through security (you'll need to show your passport and proof of paying the tax)...walk through the waiting area that is full of orange chairs...at the end of those orange chairs, turn right and go down the flight of stairs to a waiting area full of blue chairs...look at the large reader board to find out what gate you will depart from...go to the appropriate gate and check in...from the gate, you will board a shuttle that takes you to the foot of the plane.
