Web design is an alternative for those who have not got the talent to express their thoughts and feelings on a sheet of canvas with paint, but nonetheless wish to showcase different moods and inspiration, to be praised and to be criticised. The appeal of web design is its shear simplicity to pick up, but attaining mastery involves intensive practice and learning, which is all too elusive for most of us who never got the time.

I made sure i had time.

First up was the Technoquest Shop for an NTU competition. Was supposed to be an online shop that sold computer parts. I managed to get the technical code working with the help of senior Danica, it was a horrible horrible looking entry though. Didn't win anything, if there was anything i gained from TQshop, it was some knowledge of Javascript and a friendship with a senior who provided selfless guidance and advice for the rest of my JC time. Seniors can be nice and useful if u get to know them, and i think some might enjoy being of help, that is, when they can find the time.

Next up, Thinkquest '99. Having lost 2 members, i trudged on this solo crusade. Didn't have enough time, so i had to focus on content instead. It was a site against Racism. There are original content which i wrote and i'm proud of. But when it came to design and interactivity, i failed miserably. Didnt make the semis, didn't expect to anyway. Nonetheless, it was another learning experience.

Then there was the Chinese webpage competition that i was not supposed to be a part of, but offered to help out the team in my class anyways. I produced an entire shockwave interactive movie. Didn't win anything, again. But i learnt much about Flash, that was to lead to greater productions in future.

Then the 2 VS pages. The first, the Official VS 4J'98 website, the second, the VS China Trip '99 website. I didn't actually go, but my ex-history teacher approached me, i obliged to do it for free. And im particularly proud of this site. Despite being simple looking, i rank it as one of my best productions.

All that Flash study and training had to lead to something. The massive VJC99S43 site. The entire site is an interactive shockwave movie. It was made for nothing less than first prize. Got third. Couldn't believe it then, couldn't believe even after i saw the other entries. Then i got over it by thinking i shouldn't brood over such trivial compeitions. I was made for bigger stages with expert judges.

The Footy Business is an entry for Thinkquest 2000, my second attempt at it. This time, i chose to work with a friend in NJC and a Romanian, i thought if i could do it with first-timers, it would be so much more and achievement than to do it with Americans. Gave it my everything for months, content was there, interactivity was there, and graphics were original and consistent. Then again, you should have realised the trend by now, didn't win anything for all my effort. But i genuinely believe this will only spur me on to greater accomplishments.

Ever since Mr Gi got me started, i have never looked back.
I am not quite there yet, but i'll keep working at it.

Web Design is truly a practical art anf entertaining skill in itself. I would recommend basic startup crash courses to be made availble for all students, and advanced courses incorporating advanced authoring software for those who are genuinely keen to further pursue their interest.
