- What grip does:
A properly fitted grip will improve your control
over the tennis racquet, enhancing your performance.
A grip that is too small will allow the racquet to
twist in your hand and can eventually lead to Tennis
Elbow. A grip that is too large will decrease wrist
snap on serves and prolonged use can also cause
Tennis Elbow.
- How to choose the right size grip:
Place the end of a ruler at the
bottom horizontal crease in the
palm of your open racquet
hand. Measure from this point
to the tip of your ring finger.
This is your ideal grip size.
- Types of string:
String is made from two types of
materials: natural gut, constructed
from the muscle layer of beef
intestine, and synthetic. Natural gut
generally offers better playability and
synthetics typically offer improved durability.
- String gauge:
Gauge measures the thickness of the string. Thinner
strings, from 16 to 17 gauge, deliver better feel and
playability. Thicker string, at 15 gauge, provides
increased durability.
- How to select the correct tension:
Staying within the manufacturer's recommended
tensions for optimum performance.
The lower end of this range will help
put more power into your swing. The
higher end of this range will deliver greater ball
control. As a general rule, higher tensions are
recommended for experienced players only.
