YUUKI MIAKA is an all around ordinary high school examinee, (with a tremendous appetite.) She's not the smartest girl in the world, and she's clumsy and a little bit ditzy, but very sweet and cares greatly for others. She becomes the Suzaku no Miko (Priestess of Suzaku,) the protector of the country of Konan. Her best friend is Hongou Yui. They both want to go to the same high school.

TAMAHOME (Sou Kishuku) is the money loving man who saves Miaka when she first arrives in the world inside the book. He seems to love just money, but eventually it's revealed that there was another (sweet) reason why he wanted so much money. He and Miaka eventually fall in love.

HOTOHORI (Sai Hitei) the beautiful Emperor of Konan himself. He's gentle hearted man, who is well loved by his followers, even if he is a little narcissistic. He loves Miaka deeply and would do anything for her.

NURIKO (Chou Ryuuen) first appears as "Kourin," a princess in Hotohori's court. Kourin is eventually revealed to be Nuriko. At first, Nuriko is jealous because she (he) really loves Hotohori, who seems to have eyes only for Miaka. But that's not the only thing standing in the way of Nuriko and Hotohori getting together. Nuriko is a man in a woman's dress because of a tragic past.

CHICHIRI (Ri Houjun) is the blue haired wandering monk with the strange speech pattern. At 24 years of age, Chichiri is the oldest out of the Suzaku Seishi. He is, in many ways, the man among the boys and the silent leader who gets everything done. Conversely, he can also be the most hilarous character for his sense of humor, his strange way of talking, and the fact that he is the one character shown in SD while everyone else is normal.

TASUKI (Kou Shunu) is one of the Mt. Leikaku bandits, Tasuki is a tough guy of the group. He's got a potty mouth. He can kick anyone's ass, fan or no fan. He says hates women. As much of a tough guy as Tasuki tries to be, he's really quite. He's one of the most hilarious characters in the series, although he's also a sentimental one.

MITSUKAKE (Myou Juan) is always the most serious among the seven. A soft-spoken man but a dedicated warrior to her priestess. He has the most tragic love story (or is it Chichiri) of all the Seishi who had love affairs before.

CHIRIKO (Ou Doukun) the youngest of the seven Seishi, Chiriko, is an extremely intelligent child. He's 13 years old, but looks even younger, a fact that he's aware of. He seems to look up greatly to strong male figures, and has a special attachment to Tasuki.
