MY FAVORITE ANIMALS

I guess my favorite animals are cats and ducks, but there are many others that I have discovered. They are all fascinating and I will try to introduce some of them to you.

I was 6 months old when I first met a cat. That one was particularly friendly and since then, cats are my favorite animals. There were a lot of cats at the place I used to live. One of them called "Fuzzy" was very kind and let me touch him. I was only one year old at that time and many cats doesn't like children of my age but Fuzzy was very patient and was the only cat who did not run away when I carefully approached them. I was even speaking to him and he seemed to understand my gibberish.

My parents bought me a book from Eric Carle, "Have you seen my cat?". I love that book. I learnt that there are many different species of cats. The big cats, lion, tiger, leopard, puma, cheetah, black panther and bobcat were all fascinating. When I was two I was able to name them in the picture book. And then my parents brought me to the zoo. They showed me the lion and the tiger. As a matter of fact, I hardly saw them. These big cats were always sleeping. My interest for them just dropped down a little and I stopped playing with my lion, cheetah and tiger's figurines. But I still like cats, small cats. One day I made a drawing of a cat. My dad was very proud and I was very proud myself. Not every animal I am drawing has this likeliness. I also made a dog's head.

At the place we are living now, there are a lot of ducks. My mother told me not to give them bread because it is not good for them, so I tried to give them grass. They came very close to me but they finally were not very interested. Here is a picture of me with MamieJo (my grandmother) and the ducks. In spring, the ducks have little ducklings. One mother duck had 6 little babies. Here are some more pictures of ducks that my parents took.

Ducks are birds and I am amazed how varied birds are. My mother installed a birdfeeder and I can watch finches, chickadees, doves and titmice every day, although I much more enjoy seeing a squirrel trying to eat all the food. Mom also installed a special feeder to attract humminbirds. These are really tiny. My dad showed me some other kind of bird such as the bald eagle which is huge, and the peacock, which is making funny noises.

My parents bought several Walt Disney videos but the one I prefer is Dumbo. Since then, I am very fond of elephants. This is usually the first animals I want to see at the zoo. However I realize that not all elephants have as large ears as Dumbo and even less are capable of flying but these are however very impressive to look at. They are other big mammals at the zoo and I saw a baby black rhinoceros playing with his father. That was cute. I also like the kangaroos and find quite interesting that mummy kangaroo has a pocket where the baby kangaroo can hide. Here is a drawing of a mummy kangaroo with her baby to explain you what I am talking about. I also tried to communicate with goats but this didn't work. One day, dad showed me a young possum who lost his way. Another day, I sat down to watch a raccoon. When my dad came by looking for me, the raccoon flew. I shouted at him to come back but he just disappeared. I was very upset. My mother too but seemingly for another reason: raccoons could be dangerous to young children.
