| AWFULLY BIG ADVENTURE The End | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Boys and Girls, Well, we made it! Sorry about the delay in notification but we have been celebrating somewhat and getting into the Canada life. Aug 9 - Ililusat, Greenland to Iqaluit, Canada 4.25 hrs Before take off we had a small tragedy in that Jason had a pair of his best long underware stolen by a Huskie pup outside our tent in Greenland. After wearing them for 2 weeks straight they must have tasted great! Before leaving we had one last look at the ice fjord at 300 feet in the plane going 300 km per hour. I got a few good pics but the view was awesome. After that, another very nice flight over the Davis Strait to Baffin Island in Canada. We landed at the town of Iqaluit which is the capital of the newly established province of Nunavat. Interesting place... They just paved the roads there which is a big event. Might be a nice place someday. However, we were met by David Brock who is literally a friend of a friend of a friend from the Hague. David is a young Canadian working in the new govt and we went with him and his buddies to the Royal Canadian Legion which is the happening place there. So there we were, drinking beer, listening to Lynard Skynard (sp?) at the Legion. A full on Canadian experience! A good night to say the least. Aug 10 Iqaluit to Kuujuaq, Canada 2.1 hrs. After a late start the next morning, we donned the rubber suits for the last time and flew over the Hudson strait to the Ungava Pennisula to Kuujuaq in northern Quebec. We went there as the Inter Polar Conference of Inuit people (Greenland, Alaska, Canada and Russia) was starting and there was supposed to be music playing this weekend. Unfortunately, nothing was happening until Monday so we pitched a tent near the airport and escaped from the mosquitos who were eating us alive. In the morning, the airport was full of Inuit people arriving for the conference which made it very lively. Aug 11, Iqaluit to Parry Sound, Ontario 7hrs. The final leg which when well over Val Dor, Quebec and North Bay Ontario and the many many lakes and rivers that make up Canada. I forgot how much water there was in Canada. Upon landing in Parry Sound we had a surprise reception committee of Bruce Menie and family, and Dawson and Julie Proudfoot and family (Bruce and Dawson are mutual university friends) complete with balloons and a sign (thanks Dawson) much to our embarrassment. However, we retired to Bruce and Anitas place on Lake Jo and proceeded to drink many beers and catch up on the last 10 years plus. A nice end to the trip! Thanks... Thanks to you all for tolerating my emails if you did not want them. Thanks to Cathy for doing the website, organising my move and both my and Jasons banking. Regarding those who have not be able to get into the website, I found if you type the address rather than use the link at the bottom of the email you may get through. Thanks to all who put us up along the way. In Conclusion.... I'll be back at work in Melbourne next week which should be interesting Jason will continue travelling around Canada for the next few months and then will come back to Australia via the Pacific in Oct / Nov. A nice 14 hour leg San Fran to Hawaii... So the story will continue ..... Cheers to all and may life treat you well in the future. click here to read Jason's version click here to return to the index |
