Lee Ackerley, co-owner and executive vice president:

"Even though sales declined last year, Smith & Associates performed above the industry curve. Dealing with lower demand, oversupply of product, and industrywide layoffs, we faced our most challenging year in our 18-year history.

"From 1996 to 2000, the company experienced rapid growth in all areas of the business. New sales and

logistics offices were opened in Seoul, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Guadalajara, and Silicon Valley. The corporate headquarters in Houston, as well as our Far East headquarters in Hong Kong, expanded their operations, adding new sales and customer-care representatives, increasing warehousing and consignment program capabilities, and developing new IT software and initiatives.

The downturn in 2001 allowed us to fine-tune the advancements made in the preceding years, and in spite of the market slump, there were no layoffs or offices closed.

"As a direct result of the hard work of our team, Smith & Associates comes into 2002 at the top of our game. We're the only independent distributor with a true global footprint.

"In the coming year, Smith will continue to focus on growing our business. One area we will concentrate on is the expansion of our consignment business, with several new initiatives due to be unveiled in the coming months. Smith is also currently exploring the possibility of opening additional offices in Asia and Europe to further meet the demands of customers in those areas. Our recent ISO 9001:2000 certification will further enhance our business procedures, providing for greater customer service and satisfaction. In 2002, as in the past, Smith has a strong commitment to continuous improvement in a rapidly changing industry.

"Within independent distribution, there are three levels of global strategies. A Level 3 strategy illustrates an office in the United States with traders working different shifts to match the time zones in Europe and Asia. A Level 2 strategy includes overseas trading offices that rely on the U.S. headquarters for logistics and credit and trading decisions. A Level 1 strategy means having overseas offices that are fully independent: they can sell and deliver parts and make credit decisions without waiting on U.S. approval. Smith has tried each of these strategies and found that a Level 1 strategy provides the most effective service for the global OEMs that we work with. Building the infrastructure for this level of global service takes a huge investment of time and capital, but in the end gives Smith a significant competitive advantage over our domestic-based competition."
