The Nightmare

I lay there in the night
Enshrouded by the dark.
My thoughts at last have solitude,
As I peer into the dark.

I hear your steady breathing,
And your sometimes present snore.
I close my eyes and see myself,
On a distant wooded shore.

This land, I know, I've never seen.
Yet it harrows my soul with fear.
There is an evil presence there
Regardless that you are near.

You cannot stop what is in my mind,
As much as you wish you could.
I know you cannot save me,
Although I wish you would.

I'm trapped within my mental prison,
My wimpers force you awake.
In frightened murmurs I call your name,
You stir me with a shake.

I move up close within your arms
Safe from all the world.
I resume my slumber lying there
In your arms, I'm safely curled
