Leslie was 4 and Emmalie 3
when they participated in
their first Gymkhana.

They were very proud of their ponies and very pleased with
the ribbons they had won.
Here is Jules on her
new horse 'Smokey'.
Tracy and Jules spent years going to pony club and gymkhana's and as soon as they were big enough Leslie and Emmalie wanted to ride too.

What could be more fun than getting a 3 year old and a 4 year old up at 6am to have breakfast and get ready for pony club?

I can think of a few things but with two horse mad grandchildren I didn't stand a chance.
We would load the gear and the ponies and drive to pony club and because Leslie and Emmalie were so young they were led. At least we got good exercise... lol.

The next thing was the Gymkhana's. These were really big days for Leslie and Emmalie because they had a chance of winning ribbons and maybe even the occasional trophy.

It made all those days of riding and being taught to do things the right way worthwhile.

Gymkhana's are fun... particularly if you let the children enjoy themselves and just do their best. Just because you get a trophy does not mean you are a winner. You are a winner if you have done your best and anything else is a bonus.

Tracy has retired from riding after having the children. She now does what I used to do... worries herself sick that something will happen to the children.

Jules is training a new horse for Emmalie so that she can go back to pony club next year.

You will see a tribute to 'little Smokey' further down the page.
Pony Club Gymkhana's are such fun.
The little black pony whose head shot is featured on this page was another Smokey. He was Leslie's firstly and when Leslie decided horses weren't for him Smokey became Emmalie's pony. They rode as the perfect pair and Smokey gave Em an extremely good grounding in horsemanship.
Smokey wasn't a spring chicken either. I don't think anyone knew just how old he was just that he had been around the pony clubs in the state for a long time.
We said a fond farewell to Smokey early in 2001.  Not a good way to start the year.
Thank you little mate for being such a good pony for Emmalie.
You won't be forgotten.
