Rose DeWitt Bukater is a 17-year-old woman, the daughter of two
rich Philadelphia citizen. She is engaged to
Caledon Hockley, the son of
Nathan Hockley, a Pittsburgh steel tycoon.

During her trip aboard Titanic, she makes a suicide attempt and is saved by Jack Dawson, a third
class passenger different from Rose in all the ways someone is different from another in Edwardian
standards. Cal, to thank Jack for his
heroic act, invits him to a supper in first class.
To thank him in her way, Rose fetches Jack into third class (this scene has been cut) and they walk
on the boat deck, talking about different things. Rose, who loves art, discovers that Jack is a
drawer and he tells her his whole story.

After the boring supper in first class, Jack invites Rose to a
real party in third class.
She enjoys herself more than anytime before...But, the next day, Cal is furious about this (Lovejoy
has followed Rose and told him everything about her scandalous behavior) and, a few minutes later,
Ruth forbids her to see Jack again.

Jack comes to Rose and tells her he loves her, but he knows he has nothing he can give her (or at
least nothing material). After thinking about it, Rose joins him at the bow and there is the famous
flying scene, during which they exchange their first kiss.

Jack draws Rose wearing only the
Heart of the Ocean, the
very worth diamond Cal gave Rose. As Lovejoy, Cal's manservant, gets into the suite, they run away
down to the boiler rooms, cross it, running, and enter the Hold #2*, where they
consume their
love in a Renault touring car belonging to
William Ernest Carter,
a first class passenger.
* A mistake here: there is no way to go directly from the Boiler Room 6 to Hold #2, which is one
deck upper.
They go back up to the forward well deck and kiss...but the ship collides with the iceberg. As they
realize the situation is grave, they decide to tell Ruth and Cal. So do they. But Cal has found
the drawing and decided to get Jack out of his way for a little while. He gets Lovejoy to put the
Heart of the Ocean into Jack's pocket. The Master at Arms arrests Jack. Cal slaps Rose across
the face, but right then a steward gets in and tells them they have to put their lifebelts on
and get to the Boat Deck. So do they.
But on the moment she is to board the lifeboat, Rose pulls back to fetch Jack. Cal asks her
Where are you going? To be a whore to that gutter rat?. And Rose, listening nothing but her
love for Jack and her newly-born hate for Cal, answers,
I'd rather be his whore than your
wife. And she spits into his face before running away. She finds
Thomas Andrews and he
tells her the way to find Jack. She does, pulls him free and they get back up (they have to break
off gates and such, but they get back up there) and realize almost every lifeboats are gone. They
go forward and reach Boat 2. Jack tries to convince Rose to get into the lifeboat, but doesn't
get it. Cal arrives and, both together, get her to go away. But, once she realizes she really can't
go, she jumps back onto the ship and Jack runs down the Grand Staircase to find her back.
Cal is furious and tries to shoot them/her/him, but they run down before he can. He laughs a lot
as he realizes she now has his coat on (he put it on her as she was to board Boat 2) and that in
this coat is the
Heart of the Ocean. Rose and Jack
get to a locked gate and ask a steward going by to save them, but he drops the keys and run back
up. Jack plunges into the water to get them back and finally opens the gate. They go to the Boat
Deck, say farewell to Andrews and join the crowd massed on the Poop Deck. They climb over the
railing and stay there until the ship sinks. Afterward, Jack makes Rose promise to never let go
and dies. She sees a lifeboat coming back to fetch the last survivors and swims to Wilde, grabs
his whistle and blows it.
She then becomes an actress and does many things she and Jack said they were to do or things Jack
had done (such as ice-fishing). She dies warm in her bed, just as she promised Jack, and joins him
into Heaven.
