Author: Jim Lobe

Date: 1/7/03

Summary: This article talks about the Human Rights Watch (HRW) charging the pulp paper industry of Indonesia with destroying the environment and the property and human rights of the indigenous people of the region. Companies are deforesting to try to pay of their debts. want the president to end the abuses. The problem really began when industries began seizing land from the people living there with help from police and military forces. People who refused were beaten or arrested. As the need for more trees grew, so did the seizing of land from citizens. Protests from these people almost always results in a failure to be recognized. People that are trying to make changes in the government about this issue are not making much progress. Part of the problem is the corruption within the government.

This article demonstrates how deforestation is affecting whole countries for the economic growth of a company. The companies will stop at nothing to increase their wealth.

This information shows how deforestation is affecting people and industry for different countries. If a country is dependent on tree sales, it is difficult for them to give up the right to cut down trees. Even if it affects the citizens of that country.
