Isn’t Evolution Just a Theory?

 

Evolution being classified as a theory leads students to believe that it is just an idea that can be chosen to be accepted or not. 

 

 

Objectives: 

·        Students will examine their ideas about scientific theories, particularly the theory of evolution.

·        Students will gather information about scientific theories to compare with their own ideas.

 

 

A.  Introductory Journal Activity

Respond to the following questions in your journal. 

1.  What does the word “theory” mean in your daily life?

2.  What does the word “theory” mean in science?  Is it the same as daily life?

3.  Name a scientific theory besides evolution.  (Name more than one if you can)

4.  Using your prior knowledge, define “evolution.”

5.  Give two examples that support the theory of evolution. (Include up to five if you can)

 

 

B.  Video Segment

1.  Watch the video segment, “Isn’t Evolution Just a Theory?

2.  Complete the notetaker as you watch.

 

C.  Comparing Journal with Notetaker   

1.  Use a yellow highlighter to mark information on your notetaker that is also found in your journal.

 

2.  Use a green highlighter to mark information on your notetaker that is different from the ideas recorded in your journal.

 

3.  Select one piece of green information to write about in your journal as a follow-up to the video.  Be sure to include evidence raised in the video.

 

4.  Respond to the Reflection prompt.

 

5.  Record any questions you have in the box for tomorrow’s class.
