SPORT or STANDARD: Take Your Pick!

Last update: August 5, 2002

MSF's textbook for "Basic RiderCourse" which people under the age of 21 in California must take to get a motorcycle license has a section called "Differences Between Types of Motorcycles." The version copyrighted in 1986 (the version the son of a friend of mine received when he took the course last year, 2001) has the section on pages 2 and 3, and the following is similar to how they present SPORT and STANDARD types. Both captions are the exact quotes from the book. The images they have in the book are line drawings of similarly shaped bikes.

Sportbike
SPORT
Low handlebars, rear-set pegs.
Designed and styled for performance. The "sports cars" of motorcycles.

Standard Bike
STANDARD
General all-around street use.

Do you notice a big difference in the number of words they use to describe two different types of motorcycles?

Which type do you think young people find more appealing?
