A Baffling Number in Traffic Collision Statistics

Last update: December 3, 2002

An Incomplete Table

When I was looking at TABLE 2E FATAL AND INJURY COLLISIONS BY LIGHTING BY INTERSECTION /NON-INTERSECTION, RIGHT-OF-WAY CONTROLS - 2000 of California's 2000 Annual Report of Fatal and Injury Motor Vehicle Traffic Collisions, I found one number very baffling.

The following is based on the table, but the baffling number which is supposed be in the turquoise cell and other relevant numbers in the three green cells are deliberately hidden:

Table H11-1: Fatal and Injury Collisions by INTERSECTION/NON-INTERSECTION, RIGHT-OF-WAY CONTROLS: California: 2000 [Incomplete]
INTERSECTION/NON-INTERSECTION TOTAL Ratio:
Injury/Fatal
FatalInjury
Intersection 64263,89699.53
   Controls
      Functioning 51549,56096.23
      Not functioning 535170.20
      Obscure -40N/A
      None 11813,585115.13
      Not stated 436090.00

Non-Intersection 2,689

TOTAL 3,331

What is your guess of the value of the baffling number which should go into the turquoise cell. Think for awhile....

Only after you've gotten your best guess for the number, see the complete table.

Are you as baffled as I am?
