quote:
Remember, that most motorcycle accidents occur on a straight road, in good weather, when you dont expect anything to happen.
Do you believe this?
Do you know who said this?
When I first saw this statement, I couldn't believe it. To prove the above statement false, I set out to do queries at FARS Web-Based Encyclopedia. The findings were surprising. The following table is based on the findings:
Fatal Motorcycle Crashes by Road Alignment and Weather Condition
Road Alignment Weather Condition All Conditions No Adverse Conditions Number Percent Number Percent Straight 1,909 60.0 1,861 58.5 Curve 1,264 39.7 1,224 38.5 Total *3,181 100.0 *3,181 100.0 *Includes 8 motorcyclists killed in unknown road alignment.
As absurd as it may seem, as far as fatal motorcycle crashes are concerned, the above quoted statement is true. (Unfortunately I have no resources to obtain the corresponding data for injury motorcycle crashes at this time.)
Do you want to know who said the above quoted statement? Mr. Hugh H. ("Harry") Hurt, Jr, the author of Motorcycle Accident Cause Factors and Identification of Countermeasures (more commonly known as the Hurt Report), said it in Interview With Harry Hurt By David L. Hough .
