Comments: 1. No, no smut in this one yet – but that will come too, I swear! I just need to get over my irritating smut block first ;)

2. Title comes from a beautiful song by Mandalay called “Insensible”

3. Jo beta. She owns me now.

She was a resident. He was a med student. In the ER, she was his resident, and he was her med student.

For the past three weeks, Abby kept finding herself repeating those three facts in her mind endless times, hoping that eventually they will be so strongly enchanted in her mind that she will never think of him in a way that didn’t involve a lab coat, a stethoscope – an objective evaluation she is supposed to hand out at the end of his rotation.

Each time she caught a glimpse of his piercing blue eyes in just the right light, or saw a gentle smile he gave a fearful kid, or that joyful laugh at another one of Morris’ idiotic acts, Abby had to stop for a moment, stare, enjoy... and then, the hardest thing – remind herself of those three irritating facts, and go on with her work.

Because Abby was a resident, and Jake was a med student, and she was his supervisor, and there were some very strict rules against them dating, and Abby knew it, and even Jake knew it {though it didn’t stop him from flirting, or her from flirting back}, and now she had to apply them and never think about dating Jake again.

And not that Abby meant for this to happen, because she had become very good at following rules, but when she and Jake were leaving the hospital after a tiring shift, and he asked her if she wanted to grab something to eat, Abby said yes – but only because she was very, very hungry, and the food available in her apartment was at least a month old.

They went to dinner at some Mexican place Jake said he really likes – and Abby didn’t forget that fact even months later – and it was good indeed, and Abby laughed a lot, like she hadn’t in months, probably. Maybe even more. And Abby thought that if she weren’t a resident and he her med student, she’d kiss him right now and tell him that he’s one of the nicest guys she had ever met, and maybe he’d even kiss her back.

But she didn’t kiss Jake, and Jake didn’t kiss her, but after dinner he did drive her home, because he had a car and she didn’t, and who rides the El after midnight? On the way to her place they laughed some more, though he tried not to laugh too much because it collided with trying to drive, and he told her about his family, and she didn’t tell him about hers – but promised to some other time.

When they arrived at her place, he stopped the car and looked at her, and Abby just forgot about the rules, and the objective evaluation. Instead, she may have invited him for “coffee or something,” and may have let him kiss her when they were upstairs, and may have asked to him to stay, and may have helped him undress her, and may have helped him get undressed as well afterwards, and may have forgot all about the coffee.

And in the morning, when Abby woke up with Jake's arm wrapped around her waist, holding her close, and his beautiful eyes staring directly into hers, Abby didn't regret a thing.
