I Look Away
by Julian

the rain splashes on a maple leaf
and washes onto my face
and frogs are busy croaking
leaping and watching as I stare back

now I look away to see
a horse in a level land of greenery
eating dew-soaked grass and neighing as
a wild horse should but
now he swats his tail and gallops away

now I look away to see
two robins building a nest
high up in an old maple tree
and they fly away never to return
to finish their new haven

now I look away to see
green pastures filled with cows
and bordered by tiny wooden stakes
that appear to be white
and hide the cows behind them

now I look away to see
a barn owl hooting in the full moon
ducks quacking and swimming in a pond
and geese joining them for the winter
while hens lay eggs that never hatch

now I look away to see
a giant tree with wide flat leaves
that's home to a squirrel family
gathering acorns and nuts
to store for the winter

now I look away to see
a road through this forest
filled with drying brown leaves
as cars drive over them
and deliver more people

now I look away to see
a building rising high above the earth
and nearly scraping the clouds
as it casts its shadow over me
and I am meant to be so small

now I look away to see
a devastating thing to me
an element a tool of death
a way to kill a man without
his knowledge of his death

but now I look away to see
that a ray of hope is shining through
a tiny gap between the gray rain clouds
and it is shining right upon
the building dark and looming

now I look away to see
nature back and gleaming bright
and still carrying on
even though this terrorizing thing
is standing next to it

now I walk away to home
to safety and to refuge
from the horror of the world around me
as I become frightened of what might
happen if I look away for just a second more
so I walk away slowly and hope.
