Lust

Ooh, this one was interesting.  I showed it to some people on an internet service I quickly grew tired of, and one girl reacted quite violently, apparently thinking I was some sort of psychopath who wanted to kill any female who dared to want to look attractive.  Psshaw.  She merely missed the point I was trying to make.  This female in the poem, who is so obsessed with being liked and so single-minded about looking good, perhaps better than everyone else, is openly asking for other people to lust after her or completely despise her, she is not leaving any room for alternatives.  But, lust and despise can take on many forms, as is apparent from the poem's implications;  lust can also mean wanting them for violent, maniacal, perhaps evil purposes.  It is not so much disapproving of wanting to look good and attractive as it is for the need for people to go to extremes to seek approval from other people when the person whose approval they should be seeking first and foremost is their own, and to hell with everyone else.  But, I suppose this girl who thought I was some sort of psycho was probably one of those girls, and I guess that's the tragic flaw of our society.  We screw our children up so much sometimes they don't even know how screwed up they are.  Pity.
