This assignment was a poem in six sections with as few adjectives as possible. Blah. I had no ideas the day before it was due, so I decided I would find a phrase that had 6 words and start each section off with that phrase but with the stress in a different place each time. That altered inflection would then carry through as a thematic element for each section, which would flesh out the poem and allow it to take different tangents when I felt like it. The first thing I came up with was the phrase, "I am not afraid of failing," which was in fact inspired by the Godsmack song I Stand Alone, the part where he says "I'm not afraid of fading." I felt failing was a stronger idea than fading, so I conveniently borrowed it. And then of course with the fear of failing all thoughts immediately turn to Batman, which comes through mainly only in the last section. The 5 before that are mostly concerned with defining the different parts of the mantra such a person with a fear of failure would likely tell themselves to give the appearance of not being afraid. Therefore, first I define the speaker, then I define the state of being, then the idea of negation, the the idea of fear, and lastly the idea of failure. What is also evident though is that in these littls definitions, there are phrases and clichés and brash thoughts that mean little to nothing on their own, and that it is these which constitute the definition of this mantra of not being afraid of failure. But in the end, fear is overwhelming, and in the almost apologetic finale, the speaker must confess their fears for those who do not admit their fears will never learn to overcome them.
