Ignoring the part about better than ordinary, I felt that it was the perfect
encapsulation for the mood I was in when I was trying to write this one,
even though that in itself was not as simple an undertaking as it should
have been. I started back in September during a class I was sitting
in but not paying too much attention to, as I find that I am wont to do.
I wrote the first two sentences and was rather pleased with myself
about them. But I didn't have a clear idea of where I wanted to go
from there, and so those two sentences lay dormant in an unused section of
notebook until December. December was a strange and not altogether
wholly satisfying month, and I was feeling somewhat removed and somehow apart
from everything going on in the rest of the world, both on a global scale,
but also on a more personal scale. I returned to the sentences, and
the rest began to fall into place almost without hesitation. It had
been a long while since I had actually tried to write something, but I suppose
it is entirely possible that I have found a style which suits me, one that
is both structured and random, formal and conversational, verbose yet not
overly heavy-handed. I think it's also becoming more evident that the
words coming out are more and more a consequence of my particular lot in
life, as not only here but in other things I have been attempting to write,
I'm noticing a slight slant towards metaphors and language that is completely
scientific in nature. But I think there is poetry in science too, and
there are sometimes no other concepts that can convey the message I'm seeking
other than those that I find in my everyday experiences. But at any
rate, after a suitably long sabbatical, I think I'm ready to resume writing
again, though it may not be as voluminous as before; maybe instead of quantity
now I can try for quality. We'll see.
