How the Chipmunk Got Its Stripes
A long time ago a in
spring bear crawled out of his cave. The winter had been very hard and the bear
had lost weight and was very hungry. But there weren't berries yet and since the
earth was still frozen he couldn't dig for roots. The bear thought: "I
surely will die of starvation. What shall I do?" After he had thought about
that for some time, he remembered the chipumk.

"Maybe the chipmunk
can give me something to eat," the bear hoped and went to the chipmunk's
burrow. Once he had arrived there he asked: "Dear friend, couldn't you give
me something to eat?" The chipmunk replied: "Of course, I will give you some of my nuts." And he lead the bear to his pantry and gave him some of the nuts he had picked the autumn before. The bear was very happy because he liked nuts even more |
| than he liked berries or
even honey. And so the bear ate enough nuts to make him full and satisfied. The
chipunk was glad that it could help his friend. |

"Thank you so much,
my friend," the bear told him. He was so very grateful that he hugged the
tiny chipmunk and stroked his back with his paws. But his claws left behind
bloody weals in the chipmunk's coat. The blood dried and since that time the
chipmunk has got five black stripes in his coat.
