the alphabet of the classical Mongolian script

The classical Mongolian script is - like the Latin script - written in individual letters. Each individual letter is expressed through only one graphem. In difference to the Latin script and especially the Uiguric script the classical script is not written horizontally but vertically. Probably the Mongolians followed the example of the Chinese script in this regard. But the lines of the Mongolian script are written from left to right and not like the Chinese from right to left.

If you take a closer look at this script, you notice that each letter is written differently depending on its position in a word. Maybe you could compare this pecularity of the classical script with 'our' capitalization of letters at the beginnin gof certain words. Further you notice that there are a lot of letters written identically. These so-called homographs making it very hard to read in this script because if you don't know a word you may have to look it up several times in a dictionary. On the other hand they also enable this script to reflect all the Mongolian dialects.
