BALIKPAPAN DURING WORLD WAR II

Mission To Balikpapan
B-24s bomb Pacific oil refineries by W. David Lewis

Balikpapen was called "one of the brightest jewels in the stolen treasure house of the East Indies" because of the vital importance of its oilfields and refineries to the Japanese war effort. In this article, W. David Lewis tells of the first raid on Balikpapen by B-24s of the 5th and 13th Air forces, including the adventures of Joseph Tafaro, pilot of the Liberty Belle II. During the raid, the Liberty Belle II was damaged by enemy fighters, later causing it to make a water landing near a small island.
