1. What is Noni? What is the Noni Juice?
The Noni juice is extracted from the Noni fruit. The Noni fruit is a little, green, bumpy tropical fruit known scientifically as "morinda citrifolia" and locally as noni, nono or nonu. The purest, most potent and most abundant yield comes from plants grown and harvested in the wild in the pristine environment of the islands of French Polynesia in the South Pacific. The fruits are the richest ever and a completely organic source of the alkaloid Xeronine. In the last 2000 years, the Polynesians and the inhabitants of the Asian Pacific Region have known the secret of good health of this plant and have been using it to enhance good health, alleviate pain, prevent disease and heal nearly all sorts of sickness and ailments. It has been a long time indeed, since the Polynesians found out that all parts of the Noni plant had a certain use in helping human health and well-being: the fruit and the juice, the leaves and the roots, the bark and the seeds. Noni seeds have a purgative (laxative) action. Its bark has strong astringent properties and is used to treat malaria. The leaves are used to relieve pain and to treat external inflammations. Extracts of the root lower blood pressure, and the Noni juice itself has many medicinal uses. Science has discovered that the most nutrient-abundant noni grows on the lush islands of French Polynesia. The original noni juice, trademarked TAHITIAN NONI Juice, is now being produced by Morinda Inc. Indeed, this company created this singular product through careful research and years of development so that people can enjoy noni the way it has been used for centuries. Since Morinda Inc. began its operations in 1996, not only noni has become French Polynesia's number-one agricultural export, but it has also impacted the lives of millions and millions worldwide for good. Over the years, there have been numerous scientific as well as anecdotal reports and individual testimonies on specific medical benefits of the Noni juice. This website intends to also bring some of these to the attention of the reader for his/her own information. But, it is most important to know that, in legal and official terms, this juice is NOT A DRUG, although it appears to do miraculous wonders on the health of those who partake of it. The US FDA has approved the Tahitian Noni Juice by Morinda as a liquid dietary supplement and has put it on the G.R.A.S. (Generally Regarded As Safe) list. So, Morinda Inc. sells this product as a "liquid dietary supplement" with an "assurance of quality, purity, and authenticity". So, as far as US FDA. Morinda Inc. and this website are concerned, the Tahitian Noni juice is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Now, this being said, it is interesting to review what over the years the scientific and the consumer's world have found out about this product.
2. Generalities
The Noni (or nono, or nonu) juice is reported to have scientifically shown the following:
It works at REPAIRING SICK INDIVIDUAL CELLS and ultimately helps them regain normal function. It regulates proper cell function, increases the ability of cells within the body to absorb and utilize nutrients such as vitamins and minerals, and actually regenerates damaged cells
Subsequently, it REJUVENATES the body in general and the body's NATURAL healing powers in particular It RESTORES VIGOR to health and well-being. It RADICALLY STIMULATES the immune system It INHIBITS the growth of tumors
The juice works at the cellular level in the body to rejuvenate it, increase the cell's function, and ultimately stimulate and strengthen the human immune system. Because it works at the most basic level of the human health, its impact is probably such as it makes observers and consumers alike feel that this product acts like a miracle gift and a medicine from God. As we consulted a variety of sources, we have found an endless list of claims made, some by scientific researchers, some by health professionals and some by noni users and beneficiaries of the noni. These claims include some sort of alleviation or improvement or disappearance of symptoms in the following health situation: cancer, immune system failure, high blood pressure, menstrual cramps, arthritis, diabetes, asthma, fibromyalgia, gastric ulcers, mental depression, senility, rejuvenation drive, poor digestion, atherosclerosis, blood vessel problems, heart trouble, kidney and bladder disorders, pain suppression, addiction (tabacco, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, etc.), chronic fatigue syndrome, stress, allergies, ADHD, colds and flu, cuts and bruises, burns, rashes, infections, irritations, fight against HIV/AIDS, healing of animal patients, to name a few. Also, there have been claims that the Noni enhances sexual performance, boosts athletic performance, helps in muscle building, and overall enhances health and the quality of life. If these claims are true, what makes a single product, the noni, to be able to address this wide variety of ailments and sicknesses? There must be a curing principle or a reason to makes this happen. What is it?.
3. Nutraceuticals
A "nutraceutical" is any food that is used as medicine. Stephen DeFelice, founder and chairman for the Foundation for Innovation in Medicine, is the one who coined the term "nutraceutical." He provides a very broad definition: "any substance that may be considered a food or part of a food, and provides medical or health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease." According to a focus-group research by the International Food Information Council in Washington, D.C., nutraceuticals are "functional foods," i.e. "foods that may provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition." According to Alison Stein Wellner, Eat, drink, and be healed, in Magazine: AMERICAN DEMOGRAPHICS, March 1998, "as far as Uncle Sam is concerned, a product that can be consumed is either a food, a dietary supplement, a food for special dietary use, a medical food, or a drug. The category a product falls under determines what kinds of health claims it can make. ... But under the current regulatory scheme, most of today's functional foods are sold as dietary supplements. Dietary supplements can make any health claim without prior FDA approval, so long as there is research to back up the claims. Dietary supplements may be sold in any form, including pill, powder, liquid, and conventional food. The law is very specific about the language a dietary supplement may use to make a health claim." Tahitian Noni juice is a LIQUID DIETARY SUPPLEMENT, and it contains a wide range of NUTRACEUTICALS. Dr. Hirazumi and Dr. Neil Solomon (MD, PhD) have identified in Tahitian Noni juice over 153 nutraceuticals, including alkaloids, damnacanthal, scopoletin, serotonin, proteins, proxeronine, proxeroninease, xeronine, to mention a few. It seems that the various interactions of these chemical components are the ones generating the miracles. 4. Xeronine and Cell Regeneration
Years of research by biochemist Ralph Heinicke, Ph.D., University of Minnesota alumnus, indicate that, the Noni juice contains a large molecule called proxeronine. When a person drinks Noni Juice on an empty stomach, the proxeronine combines with enzymes in the body to form an essential substance known as xeronine. Once xeronine is formed, it combines with many proteins in the body that require xeronine to function. There is a specific site on certain proteins that allows them to combine with xeronine. Many of these proteins are not able to function without xeronine. However, not all proteins require xeronine to function. But many vital proteins (the substance that give structure to hair, skin and bones, and allow the transport of chemicals and nutrients through the cell membrane) acting as hormones (which coordinate all bodily processes at the molecular level), antibodies (which incapacitate foreign bodily invaders such as viruses) and enzymes (which facilitate all chemical production in the body) need xeronine to carry out their duties. Also, xeronine revitalizes and invigorates the cells by enabling nutrients and medicines to enter the cells more easily. Dr. Heinicke's well-known view is that without xeronine, life would cease. He advocates the use of the Noni fruit in juice form and believes that the Tahitian Noni juice by Morinda Inc. is the most effective, the most abundant and the safest source of xeronine. Dr. Neil Solomon compares the role of proxeronine to that of a conductor of a symphony orchestra. "Just as a conductor skillfully conducts the participants in an orchestra, proxeronine directs the various amounts of nutraceuticals, other natural biochemicals and building blocks (i.e. hormones, proteins, enzymes, serotonin, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants) to go to that part of the sick cell(s) to help in healthy regeneration. Once this happens, under the direction of its conductor, the cells once again work in harmony and play beautiful, helpful music." (Tahitian Noni Juice: How much, How often, for What, p.5)
5. Observed Medicinal Properties of the Noni Juice
The Noni Juice is characterized and its medicinal properties summarized by healers and scientists as antibacterial, analgesic, anti-congestive, anti-oxidant, anti-catarrhal, anti-inflamatory, astringent, emollient, emmenagogue, laxative, sedative, hypotensive and anti-hypertensive, blood purifier and tonic, a natural product that is useful for the prevention and the treatment of disease and other ailments. Dr. Heinicke found that Noni is very rich in antioxidants, phytonutrients, bioflavonoids, essential amino-acids, key vitamins and minerals (including Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc). There are so many research cases, testimonies and individual experiences that corroborate the medicinal merits of the Noni juice. There is no way one can effectively and efficiently put them all on a website. These cases are published in HEALTH NEWSPAPERS and in a multitude of BOOKS, many of them one can order from Massy Multibiz. But, let us report at least a few cases.
6. Anti-cancer Activity
In the book Simply Noni (Morinda citrifolia), Awieca, Inc., February 1998, Tonita d'Raye writes: "A very significant study citing the anti-tumor activity of Noni juice was conducted in 1994 by a team of scientists at the University of Hawaii. Twenty-two live laboratory mice were injected with active Lewis Lung Carcinoma cells then given a daily injection of a Noni juice extract. Mice left untreated died in nine to twelve days, and mice injected with the Noni extract lived significantly longer. Almost half of the mice survived for more than fifty days, and four continued to survive. On the average, the treated mice lived from 40% to 119% longer than the untreated mice. A study repeated on a different group of mice achieved similar results. The research team concluded that chemicals in Noni seem to act indirectly by enhancing the host immune system involving macrophages or lymphocytes, which protect the body from infection and foreign substances by producing antibodies." In other words, the chemical constituents of the Noni juice acted indirectly by enhancing the ability of the immune system to deal with the invading malignancy by boosting macrophage or lymphocyte activity. Still referring to this study, another author, Rita Elkins, M.H., confirms that "further evaluation theorized that the unique chemical components of Morinda citrifolia - the botanical name of Noni - initiate enhanced T-cell activity, a reaction which may explain the multi-faceted use of Noni to treat a variety of infectious diseases." (Noni. Morinda Citrifolia., 1996: Woodland Publishing, Pleasant Grove, UT, p.22) Elkins further reports: "In Japan, similar studies on tropical plant extracts found that damnacanthal, a compound found in Morinda citrifolia was able to inhibit the function of K-RAS-NRK cells, which are considered precursors to certain types of malignancies. The experiment involved adding Noni plant extract to RAS cells and incubating them for a number of days. Observation disclosed that Noni was able to significantly inhibit RAS cellular function. Among 500 plant extracts, Morinda citrifolia was determined to contain the most effective compounds against RAS cells. Its damnacanthal content was clinically described in 1993 as 'a new inhibitor of RAS function'". Elkins further states: "The Xeronine factor is also involved in that Xeronine helps to normalize the way malignant cells behave. While they are still technically cancer cells, they no longer function as cells with unchecked growth. In time, the body's immune system may be able to eradicate these cells." Dr. Steven Hall, a Family Practitioner in Seattle, WA, as for him, reported what follows: "A 75 year old male with metastatic prostate cancer, most recent PSA of 55, I added ... Noni to his conventional treatment regimen and within 2 weeks, his PSA was 1.1. There is simply nothing else I am aware of that could possibly reduce Prostatic Specific Antigen from 55 (indicating uncontrolled cancer) to a normal 1.1, and DO IT IN JUST 2 WEEKS." 7. Lowering High Blood Pressure
First of all, the Noni juice works as a blood purifier and body cleanser of harmful bacteria. But, it does much more. One of its over 150 chemical compounds is called scopoletin. This compound, which binds to serotonin (another extremely important compound), opens blood vessels so that blood can move through them more easily, causing a sort of vasodilation effect. Usually, one uses a drug to do this. But, Noni, which is rich in scopoletin, does it naturally. Indeed, the Noni juice relaxes arteries, contributing to normal blood pressure. In so doing, not only it prevent those with very high blood pressure from skyrocketing, but it also keeps an adequate supply of blood coming to the heart, preventing angina pain (which results from an insufficient supply of oxigenated blood to the heart). It is also a potent free radical scavenger that can contribute to lower cholesterol levels and prevents LDL cholesterol from oxidizing and becoming an even more dangerous substance. It inhibits premature coagulation in the blood, thereby preventing platelets from clumping together into clots that can cause heart attack and stroke. But, besides, as it enhances blood flow in the body, it does that too in the penis, helping boost erections and improve the quality of sexual encounters. It is reported that Hippocrates, the Father of medicine (Greece: 460-377 B.C.), once said "Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food". He was so right. Imagine using a mere tropical fruit juice to reduce a blood pressure for which we pay so much to get the medication and still remain uncertain as to the outcome! Well, this is one of the many Noni juice's stories.
8. Miraculous Work of SEROTONIN, the "Mood Molecule"
Serotonin is a hormone. It acts as a neurotransmitter, but also affects a wide range of physical and mental responses in the body and, as said d'Raye, "plays a significant role in activities such as temperature regulation, hunger sensations, sexual behavior, and sleep patterns. Serotonin receptors also help to regulate emotions, cognition, pain, and sensory motor function." d'Raye further explains: "Serotonin is known as the 'mood molecule' because it modulates raw information and gives it its emotional tone. James Stockard, a Northwestern University psychiatrist, stated, "A person's mood is like a symphony, and serotonin is like the conductor's baton.". For example, serotonin levels in the brain determine whether we will perceive a glass of water as half-empty or half-full. Other neurotransmitters may send the message that we are full, but serotonin levels determine if we feel satisfied. ... Low serotonin levels in the brain are linked to clinical depression, suicidal tendencies, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive behavior (such as overeating), bulimia, schizophrenia, sleep problems, migraine headaches, autism, drug and alcohol addictions, Alzheimer's disease, and patterns of violent behavior . The conditions listed above may miraculously disappear or improve significantly when serotonin levels are raised." And the Noni Juice, which is rich in serotonin, provides a natural and safe source of serotonin.
9. Pain Killer
The serotonin in the Noni also regulates pain and inflammation as well as hormones, therefore helping in pain killing. But, remember, we still have the Xeronine in the Noni, which acts as an analgesic. Elkins reports: "A 1990 study found that extracts derived from the Morinda citrifolia root have the ability to kill pain in animal experiments. Interestingly, it was during this study that the natural sedative action of the root was also noted. This study involved a French team of scientists who noted a significant central analgesic activity in laboratory mice. Dr. Heinicke stated, 'Xeronine also acts as a pain reliever. A man with very advanced intestinal cancer was given three months to live. He began taking the Proxeronine and lived for a whole year, pain-free'". Therefore, it is easier to understand now why it is reported that the Noni juice is helping in menstrual cramps, acute and chronic pain, all things that make our body to ache.
10. Arthritis & Swelling of the Joints
Approximately 17 million Americans take Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) daily for treatment of pain and/or inflammation and/or fever reduction. The most known such NSAIDs are ASPIRIN and IBUPROFEN. These drugs are NON-SELECTIVE inhibitors of the enzymes CycloOXygenase (COX) 1 and 2. Simply said, these NSAID drugs inhibit COX 1 and 2 enzymes. COX 1 enzyme is called the "good enzyme". It has important body maintenance functions. COX 1, for example, was found to be necessary for platelet function and maintaining intact the gastric mucosa, the stomach lining. It seems to have little or nothing to do with pain and inflammation. This enzyme is a self-starter and is functioning all the time. COX 2 enzyme is the "bad enzyme". It is generally dormant. Its functioning is triggered by some external factors, such as injury, disease, or some blow to the body, which make it to convert arachidonic acid derived from cell membranes to prostaglandins. The prostaglandins mediate the fever, inflammation, and pain that we subsequently experience. In simple words, COX 2 enzyme is the one associated with the swelling of the joints, the inflammation, the pain and the eventual fever. As a result of their inhibiting the COX 1 enzyme, NSAIDs that are NON-SELECTIVE COX INHIBITORS, are, unfortunately, associated with serious adverse gastrointestinal effects, such as gastritis, dyspepsia, gastroduodenal ulcers, perforations, and bleeding. Dr. Roland Staud, M.D., reports that "Endoscopic studies have shown that within one week of starting NSAID therapy more than 30% of patients will have gastric erosions or ulcers, and within one year approximately 3% will have significant gastrointestinal bleeding. As many as 15,000 deaths each year have been attributed to NSAID use in the United States." (http://www.emedmag.com/stories/storyReader$118). This situation pushed pharmaceutical companies to seek an answer to how to SELECTIVELY inhibit COX 2 enzyme, WITHOUT inhibiting COX 1. Three such superstars were introduced: Celecoxib and Rofecoxib were successfully introduced in 1999 and more recently Meloxicam. Dr. Staud further reports: "Early analysis of post-marketing data on Celecoxib and Rofecoxib revealed that the drugs produced a significant decrease in the incidence of serious adverse gastrointestinal effects This low incidence of gastrointestinal effects is the major advantage these drugs have over traditional NSAIDs. Their biggest drawback is their high cost - approximately $2000/year. In some cases, however, the expense may be justified in light of the morbidity and mortality associated with NSAIDs. Currently approved indications for COX-2 inhibitors include acute pain (Rofecoxib) and signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis (Rofecoxib and Celecoxib) or rheumatoid arthritis (Celecoxib)." But, what does this have to do with the Noni Juice? The Noni Juice is a natural, potent, toxicity-free selective COX 2 inhibitor, without the side effects and the price tag of the drugs Celecoxib, Rofecoxib, Meloxicam and all the like. As we already know, the Noni Juice contains Xeronine, a natural pain-killer and anti-inflammatory that is 75% as strong as morphine, yet non-addictive and side-effect-free. That is probably what made someone call the Noni Juice "The drug in your glass of fruit juice". Remember what Hippocrates said: "Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food". Wise statement. Let our fruit juice (the Noni) be our medicine, and our medicine our juice.
11. Short statements by Specialists & Practitioners
These are some of the statements by medical researchers and/or practitioners: "It looks like I found Tahitian Noni juice to be the exception to the rule: 'if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is'" - Dr. Neil Solomon, M.D., Ph.D. "In all of my experience, I've never seen one product so beneficial in so many situations. I recommend Tahitian Noni juice to my patients and anyone interested in helping maintain good physical health -- I love it!" - Dr. Steven Hall, M.D., Family Practitioner, Seattle, WA "Tahitian Noni juice replaces a vital, essential nutrient that has been depleted from our foods and is not currently replaced by any other supplement." - Dr. Steven Hall, M.D., Family Practitioner, Seattle, WA "Noni helps improve the entire spectrum of your health, not just a single problem. Noni helps your body generate life force ... and revives your body's natural ability to heal itself." - Dr. Samuel Kolodney, Chiropractor, New Hope, PA "We have used a considerable amount of Tahitian Noni Juice with our freinds and patients. Many have had very good results -- Some have had spectacular results. The unique thing about Tahitian Noni Juice is that there is no worthy competitor nor comparable product anywhere." - Dr. Jack Souder, Chiropractor, Angola, IN "I am a complete fan of Tahitian Noni juice. The benefits it affords are unbelievable and I recommend it to all my patients." - Ken Stejskal, Homeopathic Practitioner "Tahitian Noni Juice has been very successful with my family, but I am most grateful for my four-legged patients. Tahitian Noni Juice has made my job easier. In my thirty-five years of practice, I have never seen anything like Tahitian Noni Juice." - Dr. Gary Tran, Veterinarian, Louisville, KY "Our body is constantly assaulted by an inexhaustible list of toxic chemicals found in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and in the personal care and cleaning products we use. Add to this, exposure to viruses, bacteria, and fungi that are increasingly more deadly, and we have a recipe for premature aging, disease, and death. Noni appears to be a substance that can protect us from these invaders and help us flourish despite them. Discover for yourself why people call Noni an ancient health miracle for modern times. The answer to your personal quest for health and healing may be ... Simply Noni." - Tonita d'Raye, author of the Book Simply Noni
