George COOPER

Generation One

1George1 COOPER was born circa 1751 Dutchess County, New York. He was 69 in 1820, when his pension began.1,2 According to the 1790 census, he was born before 1775.3 He married Phoebe BILLINGS, daughter of Increase BILLINGS and Phoebe STARK.1 He died in 1824 Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, . (Is this the same George COOPER who was listed in the 1835 pension list?).4 He is buried Hollenbeck Cemetery, Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.5

Durng the revolutionary War he served as a private in the New York Continental Line. He served at Wyoming, and his name is on the monument as one of the surviving heroes of that massacre.2,1 He was enumerated on the 1790 census Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, as George COOPER. The census listed his household as one male 16 and older, three males under 16, and two females.3 He was listed on the in 1835 Pension List Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, He was age 69. His pension began 21 Apr 1818 and he was placed on the pension roll 24 Sep 1819. He received an annual allowance of $96.00. (Could this be a different George COOPER?).2

Phoebe BILLINGS was born on 26 May 1761 Westmoreland, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.6 Conflicting evidence indicates she was born on 26 May 1761 Wyoming, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.7 Conflicting evidence indicates she was born on 26 May 1761 Tunkhannock, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania.8

7John H.2 COOPER (George1) was born on 16 May 1794 Pennsylvania.14 According to the 1850 census, he was born circa 1794 Pennsylvania.15 He married Obedience WILDRICH.6

John H. is listed as head of household on the 13 Nov 1850 census Pittston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, as John H. COOPER. The census listed him as age 56, labourer, born in Pennsylvania. Enumerated with him wereObedience WILDRICH, Elinor COOPER, Hannah COOPER, Mary Jane COOPER, Hulda Ann COOPER, William Wesley COOPER, Levi COOPER, and Edmund Burk COOPER.15

Obedience WILDRICH. According to the 1850 census, she was born circa 1798 Pennsylvania.15 She was enumerated with John H. COOPER on the 13 Nov 1850 census Pittston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, as Obedience COOPER. She was listed as age 52, born in Pennsylvania.15

9Charles3 COOPER (John H.2, George1) was born on 28 May 1820 Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.6 According to the 1850 census, he was born circa 1821 Pennsylvania.16 He married Mary (--?--).6

Charles is listed as head of household on the 20 Nov 1850 census Pittston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, as Charles COOPER. The census listed him as age 29, miner, born in Pennsylvania. Enumerated with him were Mary (--?--) and Phoebe A. COOPER.16

Mary (--?--). According to the 1850 census, she was born circa 1825 New Jersey.16 She was enumerated with Charles COOPER on the 20 Nov 1850 census Pittston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, as Mary COOPER. She was listed as age 25, born in New Jersey.16

The only known child of Charles3 COOPER and Mary (--?--) was:

18Mary Jane3 COOPER (John H.2, George1) was born on 23 Sep 1836 Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.19 According to the 1850 and 1860 censuses, she was born circa 1836 Pennsylvania.15,20 According to the 1870 census, she was born circa 1845 Pennsylvania.21 She married Joseph Howard WEBB, son of Jonathan Thomas WEBB and Amy Elizabeth PARIS (PARRISH), on 8 Mar 1857 Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri.22,19 She died on 23 Aug 1902 Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri, at age 65.19

She was enumerated with John H. COOPER on the 13 Nov 1850 census Pittston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, as Mary J. COOPER. She was listed as age 14, born in Pennsylvania.15 She was enumerated with Joseph Howard WEBB on the 1860 census Audrain County, Missouri, as M. J. WEBB. She was listed as age 24, born in Pennsylvania.20 She was enumerated with Joseph Howard WEBB on the Jun 1870 census Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri, as M. J. WEBB. She was listed as age 25, keeping house, born in Pennsylvania.21

Joseph Howard WEBB was born on 14 May 1827 Shelby County, Kentucky.19,22 According to the 1850 and 1860 censuses, he was born circa 1827 Kentucky.23,20 According to the 1870 census, he was born circa 1824 Kentucky.21 His father died when he was two and in 1842 his mother remarried and apparantly he did not like his step father. According to the Memphis Democrat, Joseph ran away from his Kentucky home at the age of eight (actually he was fifteen when his mother remarried). He went to New Orleans, where he became acquainted with a cook on a sailing vessel. He went to sea and remained there five years without the knowledge or consent of mother or stepfather. After the death of his stepfather, he went home where he worked on his mother's farm.19 He was enumerated with Amy Elizabeth PARIS (PARRISH) on the 8 Oct 1850 census District 2, Shelby County, Kentucky, as Joseph WEBB. He was listed as age 23, laborer, born in Kentucky.23 In 1854, Joseph moved to Scotland County, Missouri, his mother following in 1855.19 In 1859 they moved to Audrain County and later to Randolph County.19Joseph Howard is listed as head of household on the 1860 census Audrain County, Missouri, as J. H. WEBB. The census listed him as age 33, born in Kentucky. Enumerated with him were Mary Jane COOPER,Alfonsa (Alfonso) Rosety "Rosa" WEBB, and John Thomas WEBB.20 After the Civil War, Joseph returned to Scotland County and became the sexton of the Memphis Cemetery.19Joseph Howard is listed as head of household on the Jun 1870 census Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri, as Joseph Webb. The census listed him as age 46, laborer, owning real estate worth $350 and personal property worth $125, born in Kentucky. Enumerated with him were Mary Jane COOPER, John Thomas WEBB, Alfonsa (Alfonso) Rosety "Rosa" WEBB, William Robert WEBB, Amy Elizabeth WEBB, May WEBB, Anne WEBB, and Louisa Meta WEBB.21,21 He farmed for a brief period, then he worked in the old sawmill west of Memphis, owned by Houtz & Walker.19 He died on 10 Sep 1914 Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri, at age 87.19,22 He is buried Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri.6

27William Robert4 WEBB (Mary Jane3COOPER, John H.2, George1) was born in 1862 Mexico, Audrain County, Missouri.6,22 According to the 1870 census, he was born circa 1862 Missouri.21 Conflicting evidence indicates he was born on 6 Jun 1865.26 Conflicting evidence indicates he was born on 23 Apr 1867 Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri. He married Rebecca A. ROGERS.19 He married Bessie Anna STULL, daughter of John STULL (twin) and Sarah A. LEWIS, on 2 Oct 1897 Plattsmouth, Cass County, Nebraska.27 He died on 17 Feb 1903 Plattsmouth, Cass County, Nebraska.19

He was enumerated with Joseph Howard WEBB on the Jun 1870 census Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri, as Wm. Webb. He was listed as age 8, born in Missouri.21 He is said to have drowned while building a railroad bridge across the Missouri River. He stepped on a loose board while working on top of the B&M Bridge in Plattsmouth and fell 70 feet to his death.19

There were no known children of William Robert4 WEBB and Rebecca A. ROGERS.

Bessie Anna STULL. Her death certificate lists Powder River, Natrona, WY, as her place of residence. She was born on 9 Jul 1881 Plattsmouth, Cass County, Nebraska.28,29,26 She married Ward Jackson SIGMON, son of Thomas D. SIGMON and Harriet Octavia SHIVELY, on 15 Jul 1904 Osceola, St Clair County, Missouri.30,29 In Aug 1935 Bessie Anna STULL and Ward Jackson SIGMON were living Deaver, Big Horn County, Wyoming.31 She died on 5 Apr 1948 Casper, Natrona County, Wyoming, at age 66.28,29 She is buried Yuma Cemetery, Yuma, Yuma County, Colorado.28,29,32

The three known children of William Robert4 WEBB and Bessie Anna STULL all born Plattsmouth, Cass County, Nebraska, were as follows:

31Louisa Meta4 WEBB (Mary Jane3COOPER, John H.2, George1) was born on 5 Oct 1868 Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri.19,22 According to the 1870 census, she was born circa 1869 Missouri.21 She married George Grant ROSE, son of Silas Nathan ROSE and Elizabeth Haines HUBBARD, on 29 Jun 1890 Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri.6 She died on 16 Oct 1946 Goldendale, Klickitat County, Washington, at age 78.22,19 She is buried Camas, Clark County, Washington.6 She was enumerated with Joseph Howard WEBB on the Jun 1870 census Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri, as Louisa Webb. She was listed as age 1, born in Missouri.21

George Grant ROSE was born on 2 Apr 1868 Avon, Fulton County, Illinois.6 He died on 13 Jul 1946 Vancouver, Clark County, Washington, at age 78.6

The eight known children of Louisa Meta4 WEBB and George Grant ROSE were as follows:

34Mary Parrish4 WEBB (twin) (Mary Jane3COOPER, John H.2, George1) was born on 14 Feb 1875 Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri.19,22 She married Thomas Charles (Charles Thomas) SMITH, son of Jacob Charles SMITH and Malinda BOYER, on 14 Sep 1890 Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri. (Permission to marry was given by her father, Joseph Howard WEBB (the Memphis Cemetery sexton) and her mother, Mary Jane.).19 She married John T. HOSKINS on 11 Jul 1920 Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri.43 She died on 28 May 1954 at age 79.19,22 She is buried Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri.19

Thomas Charles (Charles Thomas) SMITH was born on 16 Jan 1870.44 Thomas Charles SMITH was also known in the Memphis area as Charles Thomas SMITH. It is said there was another Thomas SMITH in town and to avoid confusion, he unofficially changed his name to Charles Thomas. He was also known as Thomas "Buddy" SMITH and Thomas "B." SMITH.19 He died on 25 Mar 1916 Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri, at age 46 . (He died from accidental gunshot wounds).45 He is buried Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri.19

The six known children of Mary Parrish4 WEBB (twin) and Thomas Charles (Charles Thomas) SMITH were as follows:

John T. HOSKINS was born on 28 Sep 1885 Kirksville, Adair County, Missouri.43 He is buried Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri. (He is buried next to his wife in an unmarked grave).43

There were no known children of Mary Parrish4 WEBB (twin) and John T. HOSKINS.
