According to the Memphis Democrat, Joseph ran away from his Kentucky home at the age of eight (actually he was fifteen when his mother remarried). He went to New Orleans, where he became acquainted with a cook on a sailing vessel. He went to sea and remained there five years without the knowledge or consent of mother or stepfather. After the death of his stepfather, he went home where he worked on his mother's farm.¹⁹ He was enumerated with Amy Elizabeth PARIS (PARRISH) on the 8 Oct 1850 census District 2, Shelby County, Kentucky, as Joseph WEBB. He was listed as age 23, laborer, born in Kentucky.²³ In 1854, Joseph moved to Scotland County, Missouri, his mother following in 1855.¹⁹ In 1859 they moved to Audrain County and later to Randolph County.¹⁹Joseph Howard is listed as head of household on the 1860 census Audrain County, Missouri, as J. He was known as "the living skeleton."^25,19
