HE'S IN THERE!
Some people may look at my grandson and think what a shame, poor little boy, but let me assure you that Cory is in there! He may not look like it, but he is very much aware of what is going on
his little world. Cory has cerebral palsy and hydro-cephalus, which has caused him a great deal of trouble in his ten years on this earth, but he still keeps a smile on his face and love in his heart.
Sitting in his wheelchair is no easy thing for Cory, he has to have his chest restrained and feet restrained also, he only has one usable hand and it is not strong enough to propel him, so he has to rely on others to get where he wants to go. With the lungs of Godzilla, he will surely tell where it is he wants to go!
If you break one of the family rules, don't let Cory see you, because he will be the first one to call MOM! He knows what you can and can't do around the house, just ask his two brothers and big sister.
Cory has had more than his share of hospital stays, and he has gotten really good at conning the nursing staff into getting him anything he wants, they all know and love him. The doctors have to come see Cory without their surgical hats on, because my little guy knows that if they have those hats on, it means another surgery.
I guess what I really want to say is, the next time you see a child in a wheelchair, don't assume that they are not aware of people and the outside world, stop and give them a smile and tell them hello, and take the extra minute to listen for the answer, if not audible, then surely by the sparkle in the childs eyes, for he is in there.
