A NAME IS A NAME

My puppywas just eight weeks old when my husband found her in a Jacksonville Beach pet shop, and decided that she was the perfect dog for my Mother's Day gift. He bought a new dog kennel, and a little padded bed to go in it, and off he went in a thunderstorm to get our little girl.

I had no idea what she looked like, and had been thinking for weeks on the perfect name for my new baby, without much success.

I sat on pins and needles as I waited for my husband to return, not only waiting to meet my new addition, but the storm was really getting to be a worry. So I was much relieved when my better half called and told me that he was on this side of Jacksonville, Fla.; that the puppy was fine and that she had picked her own name about five minutes after they had gotten into the truck and started home. He would not explain further, stating that he would tell me when he got home.

So, I continued to wait, now much amused, how could a little puppy choose her own name? That was a very long hour!

As my husband came into the house, carrying the dog kennel, he was talking a mile a minute, trying to tell me how busy the traffic was and how bad the rain was, I really didn't want to hear about any of that, what I wanted was for him to open the kennel and let me see the little scrap of dog that was to become part of our lives!

When she finally was removed from the kennel, it was not the buff Cocker Spaniel that I was told to expect, she had a red coat, and a painted face, half red, the other half, white with red freckles. By far the most beautiful Cocker Spaniel I had ever met! And those eyes, great big brown, soulful, and loving, what a beauty!!

As I nestled the puppy in my arms, I questioned my husband about the name thing. He laughed and related this story, "As I was getting on the road, I put the radio on , hoping to keep my mind off of the rain and traffic. And the song "Lady" by Kenny Rogers came on, and everytime he sang the line "L-a-d-y", the puppy would howl, just like she was singing with him, so I think she likes the name Lady." Well, as I sat looking at the most beautiful girl in my world, I thought the name was perfect for her.

It did turn out to be the perfect name for her, because she has always conducted herself in the most lady like fashion, and even manages to look the part of a very elegant, well behaved lady.
