Welcome to Mrs. Johnson's 2nd grade web site. I teach  one of four sections of second grade located at Rogers Elementary School in Rogers, Texas. Rogers is a rural community with big ideas "deep in the heart of Texas."
There are about 350 to 400 students at Rogers Elem. in pre-K through 5th grades. Our school mascot is the Eagle. Our motto is "Dare to Discover."

I have taught both regular and special education for 21 years. I hope I can offer ways to help children learn.

Word Strips
There are many reading activities that can be done with word stips. One is to add suffixes to base words. Cut strips of paper, construction paper, or manilla tag about 2" x 6" or longer depending on the number of words you are working on. About  every inch, vertically, write a different base word that will fit the suffix rule on which you are working. On another sheet of paper about 5" square, cut 2 parallel slits each 2" long and about 1/2" apart. These should be 1" to 2" from the left edge of the square. Write the suffix that you want your child to work on to the right of the slits. Thread the base word strip through the slits to create new words with the suffix. Exp.: Write suffix -ed on the square to the right of the slits. List jump, want, fold, fill on the strip. As your child moves the strip slowly, she will make jumped, wanted, folded, filled.

Math Ideas
Equation Dice Toss
A fun way to practice math facts is to use 2 dice that come from Monopoly, or another board game. The child throws the dice and adds the numbers that roll on top. Ask your child to write the number sentence or equation on a sheet of paper. Have him group all number sentences with the same answer or sum together. After a few rolls of the dice, ask him to predict which answer will have the most number sentences when you stop playing. This gets predicting outcomes into the activity as well as practice math facts. For larger sums, buy 2 dice at a local teacher store that have blank sides. Using a permanent marker, write numbers 4 to 9 on the cubes. Children love playing this "game" and will work on math facts much longer than with a worksheet.
This activity is adapted from
Math Their Way.
