Memories...

                  Make history unfold...

And our ancestors come to life.

These shared memories are from

Frances Juanita Rambo Jackson,

Great-Granddaughter of Millie Caroline Bruce and John Marion Bridges

Thank you, Frances!

My grandmother, Famy Caledonia Bridges Rambo, told of visiting her grandparents at Ducktown, TN (Wm.Alexander Bruce & Sarah Ann Walker). She said that she could stand in their backyard and watch the train go into the mountains and make a circle around the outside come out at the top before it crossed a high travel and go on its way. She was talking about the L&N Railroad Loop. It was near Farner TN., in Ducktown Basin. The Loop was in a high mountain. The train made two loops around it before crossing the tressel. The mountain was inside the loop of the Ocoee River, which is famous for its white water rafting and boating.

My great grandmother and grandmother help break and ride young horses in the springtime. Besides being women the most unusual thing about this was they broke the untamed horses. They rode sidesaddle. Back then women did not sat astride a horse. They did not wear pants so the sidesaddle was used. My Dad (Holland Sylvester) remembers Grandma riding unbroken horses.when he was small and before the boys were big enough to help papa with them.

Once Ma needed to ride somewhere and she did not have a saddle, so her and her children walked across the mountain to borrow her mother's saddle (Millie Caroline). On her way home my Dad was carrying it on his back (he being around 10 years old). He was running and bucking like he was a horse. He stumbled off the road and fell into some bushes. Only bad thing about that was there was a big hornet's nest in the bushes. The hornets thumped and banged the saddle all the way home. He got a few stings too. Needless to say he out ran all of the family home.

Grandma use to tell us girls how her mother taught her girls how to dry their hair. After washing it. They would find a rock in the hot sun and spread their long hair across it. They moved around till it dried.

Millie Caroline's grandchildren remember her flowers. Her yard was like the English cottage garden. It was covered in flowers with little paths that ran through them. With the Rose of Sharron Bush in different colors as a background.
