Migratory birds and the Bog Turtle
Migratory birds and other wildlife species, many of which are rare and some perhaps yet to be discovered, depend upon the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge and the Magurrewock Wetlands for their survival.  Case in point?  We spotted and photographed a Bog Turtle which is not listed anywhere that we could find as one of the turtle species in Maine.  Although the Internet does site 20 acres in Maine as habitat for this species in a search we ran, it is non-specific as to where they might be located and it is not on the list of the species of turtles that make the Magurrewock Wetlands their home.  Bog Turtles are endangered, and the fact that we saw one there is significant.

Turtle species lay their eggs by the highway and then retreat to the water.  Once the eggs hatch the babies scramble to reach the water.  Some cross the highway toward the water on the other side.  Unfortunately many dont make it and are crushed beneath the wheels of an oncoming 18-wheeler or automobile.  Imagine how many more would die with an increase in traffic!
