COOPERATIVE BUSINESS EDUCATION

DRESS CODE

2006-2007

Dress and grooming affects the impression you make on others, but also affects a person’s self-confidence and job performance as well.  A Cooperative Business Education student has the responsibility to project a positive, businesslike image for oneself, the employer, and Wayne County High School.  Remember that “dresses appropriately” is part of the student evaluation. The student must also adhere to any reasonable request or established policy of the employer and/or coordinator.  For example, your business may require you to wear closed toe shoes and/or a business jacket at all times.

Dress for female Cooperative Business Education students should be dresses, skirts and blouses, dress slacks, sweaters, dressy capris, and appropriate business shoes.  All shirts will be tucked in and no skin will be showing.  Sundresses, strapped tops, T-shirts of any kind, shirts with slogans and advertising, and clothing with revealing necklines and hemlines will not be worn.  Do not wear athletic shoes, flip flops, or thong sandals to work.

Dress for male Cooperative Business Education students should be a collared shirt (knit or button front), slacks, and appropriate shoes.  All shirts will be tucked in. T-shirts of any kind or shirts with slogans and advertising will not be worn.  Do not wear athletic shoes, flip flops, or sandals to work.  Unless it is a safety requirement, NO hats will be worn on the job.

Good grooming requires keeping your body and clothing clean.  Hands and nails should be neat and clean.  Hair must be shampooed frequently and styled in a manner that does not interfere with your work.  Using deodorant and brushing your teeth on a daily basis is a must.  Perfume and cologne should be used sparingly.  If you have a question about your dress or appearance, you probably need to choose the more conservative approach.

The student must adhere to any reasonable request or established policy of the employer.  Any dismissal from employment because of inappropriate dress/grooming will result in dismissal from the Business Coop program.

Specific Guidelines

1.       No jeans—unless your supervisor has specifically said that they are required or acceptable for a specific day.  Some places of business have “dress down” days—mostly on Friday—when jeans are permitted.

2.     All shirts and blouses will be tucked in.  Sweaters and over-blouses (those with a band) should hang below the belt line.  No T-shirts, sweatpants, or sweatshirts will be worn.  Absolutely no “hip huggers” will be worn.

3.     No caps or hats will be worn on the job.  At Rayonier, no caps will be worn beyond the front gate.  The only hat permitted on any job is a hard hat if you enter an area where this is required.

4.     All dresses/skirts will be knee length at least.

5.     Athletic shoes are not acceptable business dress.  Flip flops are not allowed.

6.     No facial jewelry of any type is permitted.

Students have available a changing room in “C Wing” if they wish to use it.  No student will be dismissed to leave for work if dress is inappropriate for work.

Failure to adhere to the dress code for employment will result in a point deduction on the work ethics grade (as noted on syllabus) for each offense.  The Penalties section on the Policies agreement will also be enforced and is given below:

The first occurrence of any offense (regarding attendance, absences, dress code, school discipline matters, etc.) will result in a verbal warning by the coordinator.  The second occurrence of the same or similar offense will result in a parent/student/coordinator conference.  This conference must take place within 5 school days of the offense or the student will remain at school 5th and/or 6th period until the conference occurs.  The third occurrence of the same or similar offense will result in a five-day suspension of student checkout privileges.  The student will remain at school 5th and/or 6th period(s) and the coordinator will notify the parent.  After the third occurrence, student’s checkout privileges may be revoked for the remainder of the semester if the offenses are habitual in nature and no improvement by the student has been observed by the coordinator.

As a Cooperative Business Education student, I have read the dress code and understand my responsibilities to adhere to the dress code regulations.

As an employer/supervisor, I have read the dress code for Cooperative Business Education students and will discuss with the student the general dress code expected in our workplace.  I will inform a student under my supervision when his/her dress is not appropriate for the workplace as well as contact the coordinator.
