U.S. May Use 'E-Bomb' During Iraq War
Wed Mar 19, 4:21 PM ET
By MATT CRENSON, AP National Writer
U.S. forces may use a new "e-bomb" during the expected invasion of Iraq (news - web sites) as part of a 21st century blitzkrieg designed to render Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s forces blind, deaf, dumb and incapable of retaliation.
The highly classified bomb creates a brief pulse of microwaves powerful enough to fry computers, blind radar, silence radios, trigger crippling power outages and disable the electronic ignitions in vehicles and aircraft.
"They would be useful against any adversary that is dependent on electronic systems," said Loren Thompson, a defense analyst at the Lexington Institute, a think-tank based in Arlington, Va.
In modern warfare, electronics undergird virtually every weapon more sophisticated than a rifle or hand grenade. For that reason, Air Force scientists have worked for decades on a practical way of producing powerful but brief pulses of microwaves that can incapacitate electronic equipment without damaging buildings or harming people.
Officially, the Pentagon (news - web sites) does not acknowledge the weapon's existence. Asked about it at a March 5 Pentagon news conference, Gen. Tommy Franks said: "I can't talk to you about that because I don't know anything about it."
However, military analysts say a number of unclassified documents suggest such a device is ready for the battlefield.
"There's been a lot of discussion behind closed doors in the Pentagon and in the trade press that these things are now being tested," Thompson said.
According to a 2000 report by Air Force Col. Elaine M. Walling, scientists at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico have created microwave sources that generate up to 10 times the amount of energy that Hoover Dam produces in a day.
Such powerful pulses can incapacitate electronic equipment without damaging buildings or harming people, making them an attractive weapon whenever civilian casualties are a concern.
In laboratory tests, microwave pulses can melt silicon chips, pushing their circuits far beyond their capacity to conduct electricity. But on the battlefield, even the most impressive e-bomb's effects rapidly diminish with distance. Although e-bombs' capabilities are classified, military analysts believe their range is a few hundred yards at most.
That relatively short range decreases the odds that hospitals, orphanages and other civilian infrastructure will be affected, unless they are directly adjacent to or networked with military targets.
"I think it is almost always more humane to use this compared to a conventional weapon," Thompson said.
The bombs' effects are also hard to predict, analysts say. The surge of electricity produced by a microwave pulse could go directly to the nearest bank of military supercomputers, or it could just as easily be shunted harmlessly into the ground.
"The effects are hard to focus. The moment the energy is absorbed into wiring or other electrically conductive material you don't know where it's going to go," Thompson said.
Those uncertainties and others may prevent e-bombs from playing a major role in the anticipated U.S. offensive against Iraq, said Lt. Col. Piers Wood, a military analyst at the defense policy think-tank globalsecurity.org.
"There will be a few commanders who will see these and get to try them out," Wood said. "We're not talking about arsenals of these things."
<textarea name="NAME" cols=40 rows=8></textarea>
Defense experts are particularly eager to see if e-bombs can reach into deep underground bunkers that could otherwise be neutralized only by tactical nuclear weapons. By shutting off the electricity, a microwave weapon could render a bunker uninhabitable by disabling lighting, security systems, ventilation and computers.
<textarea name="NAME" cols=40 rows=8></textarea>
Eventually, Wood said, other nations may acquire high power microwave weapons; American forces, which depend so heavily on technology, would be particularly vulnerable to them. He predicted that soon all military electronics will have to be protected from high power microwaves by metal casings, with sophisticated circuit breakers connected to any incoming wires.

BUSINESSWEEK ONLINE
March 21 — Just hours before the U.S. launched a bombing raid in Baghdad at dawn on Mar. 20, Israelis were ordered to seal a room in their homes and carry gas masks around with them at all times. That’s a precaution in case Iraq’s Saddam Hussein fires a chemical weapon into their midst.

But other American units are still engaged further south in fierce fighting.
<br>In another development, the Iraqi military authorities say that they have captured 35 American prisoners of war, and will show them on television.
The US has confirmed that some of its soldiers are missing in southern Iraq.
General Richard Myers, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said: "They are trying to account for the soldiers that are reported missing, and beyond that we don't know."
Asked how many soldiers were missing, he said: "Less than 10, we think."

WASHINGTON, Sept. 17 — President
Bush said Wednesday that there was no evidence that former Iraqi
President Saddam Hussein was involved in the Sept. 11, 2001,
terrorist attacks, disputing an impression that critics say the
administration tried to foster to justify the war against Iraq. |

“THERE’S NO QUESTION that Saddam
Hussein had al-Qaida ties,” the president said. But he also said, “We’ve had
no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved with September the 11th.”
The president’s comment was the administration’s firmest assertion
that there was no proven link between Saddam and Sept. 11. It came after
Vice President Dick Cheney clouded the issue Sunday by saying, “It’s not
surprising people make that connection.”
Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Cheney also repeated an
allegation, doubted by many in the intelligence community, that Mohamed Atta,
the lead Sept. 11 attacker, met with a senior Iraqi intelligence official in
Prague in the Czech Republic five months before Sept. 11, 2001.
“We’ve never been able to develop any more of that yet, either in
terms of confirming it or discrediting it,” Cheney said Sunday. However,
other U.S. authorities have said information gathered on Atta’s movement
showed that he was on the U.S. East Coast when that meeting supposedly took
place.
ALLEGATION HOTLY DISPUTED
Critics of the Bush administration have pointed to statements like
Cheney’s as evidence that the administration was exaggerating al-Qaida’s
prewar links with Saddam to help justify the U.S.-led war against Iraq.
A recent poll indicated that nearly 70 percent of Americans believed
Saddam probably was personally involved. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld
said Tuesday, “I’ve not seen any indication that would lead me to believe
that I could say that.”
The administration has argued that Saddam’s government had close
links to al-Qaida, the terrorist network led by Osama bin Laden that
masterminded the Sept. 11 attacks. Bush himself has taken to referring to
Iraq as the central front in the war against terror.
But Bush said there was no attempt by the administration to try to
confuse people about any link between Saddam and Sept. 11. |

“No, we’ve had
no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved with September the 11th,” Bush
said. “What the vice president said was is that he [Saddam] has been
involved with al-Qaida. ... There’s no question that Saddam Hussein had al-Qaida
ties.”
BUSH WOULD WELCOME SADDAM’S
DEATH
Bush spoke after a number of newspapers from states important to his
re-election campaign printed articles Wednesday morning based on an
interview he conducted Tuesday. In that interview, he predicted that Saddam
would eventually be captured or killed, but he said the definition of
victory in Iraq would be when the country was free and peaceful.
The comments were published on the same day that a new audiotape
surfaced in which the purported voice of Saddam demanded the United States
unconditionally withdraw from Iraq or face “catastrophic” losses.
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported that Bush said that his
policies for rebuilding Iraq and dismantling militant organizations were
working but that the message had not filtered down to the public. |
|
|
|
In response to a question about
the importance of capturing Saddam, Bush said: “The definition for victory
is for there to be a free and peaceful Iraq. And yes, we’d like to capture
or kill him, as well. And we will at some point in time.”
The alleged Saddam audiotape, meanwhile, called for Iraqi men and
women to step up their fight against the U.S. occupation.
“You Mujahedeen, Iraqis and women, increase your attacks on your
enemies,” the voice said. It sounded like Saddam’s, but there was no way to
independently verify who the speaker was.
The man called on U.S. forces to withdraw from Iraq immediately.
“We call on you to withdraw your armies as soon as possible and
without any conditions or restrictions, because there is no reason for you
to suffer more losses, which will be disastrous for the Americans,” he said,
claiming that the recording was made in “mid-September.”
The man also called on Iraqis to protest against occupation in the
streets, to “beat the walls in protest” and to donate money to the
resistance.
The last purported Saddam tape was broadcast Sept. 1 by the Al-Jazeera
television network, and the CIA said it was likely authentic. |
|
|
|
REVENGE ATTACKS FEARED
Al-Arabiya news editor Aymen Gaballah said the new tape was received
Wednesday in Baghdad. As usual, he said, someone called the Al-Arabiya
office and said he had a tape of Saddam.
He said the tape was aired in its entirety, 14 minutes.
Speaking with long pauses between thoughts and with the sound of
papers rustling as if reading the message, the voice sounded to experienced
ears to be that of Saddam, who sounded very tired.
U.S. forces in Iraq have been plagued by guerrilla attacks blamed on
Saddam’s followers since he was ousted in April, hampering efforts to
rebuild the country.
In an interview published Wednesday, the commander of the U.S.-led
coalition in Iraq, Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, told The Times newspaper of
London that U.S. soldiers now also
faced revenge attacks
from ordinary Iraqis angered by the occupation.
