Annas

"What then to do about Jesus of Nazareth?"

Annas is, like Caiaphas, also a priest with a high position. In the original Biblical stories Annas is Caiaphas' father-in-law. However, in JCS he is presented as more of a close friend and partner of Caiaphas'. He is the one who presents the problems with Jesus, and kind of "pushes" Caiaphas to do something about it. In the first movie version of JCS (from 1973), there is an additional song, that's never been played in any other versions, called "Then we are decided". This is a prequal to "This Jesus Must Die", where Caiaphas and Annas discuss Jesus alone, and Annas convinces Caiaphas that he has to call the council to put an end to this. Annas' characteristic is, as a contrast to Caiaphas, a loud, screechy voice. This also makes him scary, at least in this version, where Michael Shaeffer does a great job playing this evil priest.
