BJJ followers claim the superiority of BJJ over judo when top BJJ fighters beat
third rated no name judoka. That is called Brazilian logic. The following is a
list of judoka who defeated top BJJ men. (1) Akira Shoji (Black belt but no
title in judo) knocked out Wallid Ismael (8 times BJJ champion who has defeated
Renzo Gracie, Ralph Gracie, and Royce Gracie) in R2 in Pride 4. (2) Igor
Zinoviev (Black belt but only a local (NY and NJ) title in judo) defeated Mario
Sperry (3 times world champion in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) by submission (front
choke). (3) Don Frye (2nd dan in judo) defeated Amaury Bitetti (1995 world
champion in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) by TKO in UFC8. (4) Yasuichi Ono choked out
Jorge Gracie (Helio Gracie's older brother) circa 1950. These are four cases in
which no name judoka defeated top BJJ fighters. (5) Masahiko Kimura (7th dan BB
undefeated in judo) defeated Helio Gracie (the founder of Gracie Jiu Jitsu) by
breaking two bones in the left arm of Helio, by udegarami. Helio Gracie was
hospitalized for multiple fractures. In this bout, Helio was unable o score any
counter or reverse. Kimura defeated Helio on the ground using a ground technique
which is supposed to be BJJ's strength. (6) In 1974, Wilhelm Ruska (1972
Olympics judo gold medalist in over 95kg class and absolute division) destroyed
Iwan Gomes (then the no. 1 man in BJJ) by punches on the ground in a vale tudo
match. (5) and (6) are records of what happened when top BJJ men fought top
judoka. In both of these cases, these BJJ men were brave enough to challenge top
judoka. But the bouts ended in executions by judoka.

Jiu Jitsu is the greatest grappling art. Judo is lame because they only do
throws and poorly executed submissions. Most wrestlers can take a Judo guy.
Proven in the UFC's and other no holds barred fighting. Great Olympic sport but
sorry in real combat Never has a good Judo guy beat a fellow Rickson Gracie
student. Just some words of wisdom, from the Dragon. See ya on the mat.

(the Email address is in reference to the University of Texas Longhorns... I am
a big fan of college football & since I live in the capitol of the Lone Star
State - well, let's just say it's a logical choice for me.) Anyway, back to the
Judo. I have enjoyed your page - I'm just now starting to surf for Budo links
(I'm spending more time doing that than working, it seems!). By the way, I like
your Nessie graphic. You know, there's a few different sites on the web wi h
active cameras - maybe you could set up a link that would capture images every
few minutes while you're holding class. As for my formal Judo experience, I
started studying with Darrel Sweaney in Fort Lauderdale @ the Gold Coast Judo
Association. At one time, we were the largest USJA sanctioned club in the
States. I'm not exactly sure what status the club is in because i all sorta went
to bits after Darrel passed away in '93. The Person that tried to take over the
organization did a bit of merging with of the Judo & Atemi Ryu (Darrel always
taught them seperately). Like most "reinventors of the martial arts wheel" he g
t it all tangled up. It's about that time that I dropped out of the group. Now
I'm here in Austin, Texas & looking for a club that's got a good balance between
sport & street Judo. I've worked out with the UT club but they are a hardcore

Nice to see your page - not interested in Judo particularly, it was the name
"Ardersier" that grabbed my attention! Was there last August for a vist - it was
the first time I'd been back since I was a wee bairn (1954). My dad was in the

I have convinced my 9 year old son to start judo in canberra australia. so now i
have the motivation to start after a 10 year absense. My inlaws are scotish -but
we still get on! Thank you for your efforts in setting up your website. Lastly,
i hope to get to see some judo at the olympics in 2000 but i will need tp see it
live as they never seem to show any on the television.
