REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO THE COURSE:

  1. Students must be able to read at the ninth grade level and have at least 6th grade math skills to be successful in the course. Auxiliary aids and services are available upon request to individuals with disabilities.
  2. A negative TB test or chest x-ray is required. Testing is available at the Kalamazoo County Health Department, 3299 Gull Rd, Kalamazoo, MI.(corner of Nazareth Rd and Gull Rd). Phone: (269) 373-5267. Cost is $11.00. Testing is available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m.- 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m - 4:00 p.m. Reading of the TB test must be done 48-72 hours after the TB test is administered. Please bring documentation of your negative test on the first day of class.
  3. Picture Identification is required the first day of class. Students who are not United States citizens are required to bring their VISA or PASSPORT documents and I-2 form.
  4. For students whose primary language is not English, a test (from the federal government) is administered to insure that students are able to effectively communicate with nursing home residents. Students who do not pass this test must take an English as a Second Language course before admission to the program.
  5. Felony: persons convicted of a felony or conspiracy to commit a felony within the past 15 years will not be allowed to enroll. (Public Health Code Act 368)

    Misdemeanor: persons convicted of a misdemeanor involving abuse, neglect, assault, battery, or criminal sexual conduct within the past 10 years will not be allowed to enroll. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor involving fraud or theft against a vulnerable adult within the past 10 years will not be allowed to enroll as well (Public Health Code Act 368).

  6. State of Michigan residency: If you have not lived in Michigan for the past three years you will need to obtain a federal criminal background check from the FBI before registering for a nurse aide class. Call us at 269-388-9480 (to obtain information sheet on how to proceed).
