C: Yes!

J: Charged

C: That's an experience you hadn't had before! That's goodyeah

J:
That's right, that's right. Charged people with bayonets

C: Right.

J:
And if, no I dunno, there were two sides to this part, one was one was trying to uh, I mean Anthony's an Englishman, Anthony Minghella's an Englishman

C: Right.

J: Nicole is Australian.

C: Mm-hmm.

J: The three of us suddenly making this Civil War picture

C: I know, I was just thinking about that, you guys are making a, ya know

J: But you know

C: a Civil War picture with a, with all these people who aren't from this country.

J:
Yeah, but you eh I mean, apart from the dethere were details that we obviously worked hard on; accents, uhstudying and learning at least as much as we could about the history of the Civil War and the, the lifestyle, uh, followed by those, uh, living at that time.

C: Right.

J:
But on the whole, the piece is such a it's such a heart-felt piece [makes a fist where his heart is]. It's really about every person and, in any conflict

C: Right.

J: or indeed any person in search of home really.

C: Mm-hmm.

J: I play a guy who is wounded and decides to desert to return to the woman he was in love with, and, um, shared a single kiss with four years prior.

C: And it's a long way home, too. It's, uh

J: It's a long way home. He's faced with tasks and obstacles and temptations and, uh it's, it's a soul-searching piece. But it's full of humor, and brutality [his voice is a little faint as he says the last word] and love, and it's it's a big film.

C: We have a a clip here from Cold Mountain. Anything we need to know to appreciate this scene?

J: I think this is a clip when, uh, Ada and Inman are just sort of courting each other, uh they're both very uncomfortable with words. They aren't very good at communicating, so they sort of dance around each other if ya like [encircles his fingers together in the air]

C: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

J: without ever, uh, uh uh, committing.

C: Mm-hmm.

J: And Inman, uh says that if Ada speaks to him he will agree to clear, um, Kathy Baker, who plays Lady Swanger's, top field. And she's spoken to him and so he agrees to clear the field and, I think she arrives and, uh uh, talks with him in a different way.

C: Okay, let's take a look at this clip from Cold Mountain [Clip plays] It's beautiful looking, too. Where'd you shoot that in[audience applause nearly drowns out their continuing conversation]

J: We shot that in Romania. [Conan leans in and nods at the comment] We spent six and a half months in Romania and a month here.

C: Now was that before the car stereo everyone had a piano; just drove 'em around

J: [Tickled with the joke, laughs for a few seconds]

C: "Let's hear another station!"
[mimics an animated piano player banging on the keys] "Alright!"

[Jude continues to laugh]

C: Um, I'm really looking forward to this one. I loved the book and, um, everyone's very excited about it. Cold Mountain opens Christmas Day. Uh, Jude Law, it was great to have you here. [They shake hands]

J:
Great to be here.

C: Thanks for making time. You stay right there. [Conan speaks about the upcoming guests and Jude gives a last smile and waves to the audience]
