The Last Night

Disclaimer: Total fiction, Never happened, Not meant to be disrespectful, Much love to all.

The Story:

It was the last night on earth. Their last night.

Adam hid his pain and emotion by being louder and drunker than usual. There he was, yet again, arms outspread and facing the sea, laughing maniacally at nothing at all. Occasionally he cursed and cried, but more often he laughed. There was nothing at all funny about their last night on earth, but then, what else could they do?

Nothing. No one could do anything anymore. Come dawn and everything would be over. There would be nothing left of the human race to scratch together in order to attempt a new beginning. There was no restart button, no rebooting the planets most over developed species.

Gods cursing us. Jade muttered. Now, on that this was their last night, Jade sat nursing his own stolen bottle of wine. There had been looting at first, at the beginning of the day, but when it became apparent the pointlessness of it was, the city began to calm back down again. Now and then came the occasional far away pop of a firearm as some man or woman took the gun to a loved one, or themselves, before they could see the horrible destruction of tomorrow.

Better to go out on yer own terms, the old man at the last store said as they packed their picnic basket. It was Daveys idea to have one last look at the ocean before they couldnt. The old mans words came back to his mind now as he watched Jade take another swig of the no longer expensive wine. Wouldnt mind, mind you, having me own way out of this mess. Just a squeeze of the trigger is all it takes, then, BAM! Yer lights be out quick. But. . . theres a slim chance youd still be alive, see? The bullet could miss, skip all the important things in yer skull and just pop right out the back of your head. Then youd just be laying on the floor, helpless. Youd be fucked.

Davey didnt like that man. Had been glad when they finally left the store, bearing all the goodies they could carry. As they drove away, the old man had raised a final hand in farewell, and bringing it down to make the sign of the cross. Davey wanted to cry, but he didnt think his friends would appreciate it now. They had plenty of time to cry before hand. Had weeks to mourn friends, neighbors, people they saw on the news. Now was their time. Now was the last night on earth, and it was time to party.

Adam offered Davey a beer, smiling softly. Come on. Drink one.

Davey felt all the old protests build up on his tongue, then bit them down. They meant nothing. This was the end. There was no need for any kind of hesitation, of misgivings. He took the bottle, smiling back and took a drink. He was hunched over and hacking into the sand as soon as the bitter taste hit him.

Adam and Hunter had laughed. It was thanks to Jades intuition that hed thought to grab two bottles of wine for them, incase they needed a drink or two. He handed one to Davey and popped his own open. Davey drank his carefully, grateful to the mellow, tart liquor overwhelming the harsher beer still lingering on his tastebuds.

Davey sighed and looked upward. The sun was setting now. The bright, orange glowing orb hung just above the reflecting, constantly moving waves of the ocean. The glare was fierce and made him squint but he didnt look away. He sighed. This was the last time hed get to see the sun set, the last time hed see dusk. Then the night would take over, and then there would be no more.

He turned to Jade and saw the latter was now shrugging out of his jacket, grinning. Hows about a quick swim? he said quietly, once again his instincts kicking in. This time it was to give Davey a distraction.

The singer grinned. Sure.

The weather was still warm, slightly hot. Davey had meant to at least take off his shirt before jumping in, but Jade was there, pulling his hand and laughing all the way to the water. The saltwater hit his jeans in tiny walls, quickly soaking in and dragging him downward. Davey laughed breathlessly and followed Jade as he dove into the chilling blue water.

Underwater, there was no noise. No birds, no people. Just the sound of the water in his ears, the water blanketing him all around. He found he wasnt as cold as he thought he would be, and there was just enough light from the sun to see Jades outline as he twisted this way and that with relish. He was definitely a water rat, Davey thought and smiled.

They come up for air soon and saw that they werent alone. Adam and Hunter made up their minds and joined their friends in the water, coming only waist deep.

Come on in, boys, Jade said, head bobbing as he worked to stay above water level, the temperaturess just fine!

Adam gestured drunkenly with his beer can, Thats cause your too fucking numb to feel the cold! He and Hunter laughed. Hunter drank from his beer and kicked the water playfully.

You two mermaids get wet enough? He smirked. Look behind you. The suns halfway down. When night comes, youll freeze your balls off with your wet clothes.

Jade and Davey share a smile. Who says well still be wearing them? Jade teased.

Adam snorted and Davey laughed. Hunter grinned and leered playfully. That an invitation to see the Jade-man nakey? You gonna give us a show?

Surprisingly, the tops of Jades cheeks burned pink briefly before he ducked his head below the waters surface. Hunter and Adam burst into laughter once more. Davey felt a tug on his arm and went below to join Jade, leaving the other two.

Down in the water, Davey met with Jade and clasped his hands with his own. They grinned at each other and laced their fingers together. Jade grinned and let a few air bubbles escape from between his teeth. Davey opened his own mouth, also, in an attempt to laugh and lost some air himself.

They came back up not long after, finding Adam and Hunter had retreated back to the shore. The sun was now three-quarters of the way down. Wordlessly, Jade and Davey swam, then lumbered their way out of the water. The water weighed their clothes heavily down, making their walking harder and freezing their skin in the cool breezes.

Davey was uncomfortably aware of how much his jeans clung to his legs and the way his shirt clung to his upper torso. Hed stopped wearing form-fitting clothes after their last touring sessions and had gotten used to loose and comfortable clothes. And no shoes. He smiled to himself as he felt the shifting, soft sand underfoot turn to coarser, grittier textures the further he got from the shoreline.

He looked up and saw Jade hadnt followed him the entire way. He had stopped ten feet from the water line and stood motionless to the setting sun. Davey thought he heard Jade mumbling another prayer, one of hope. He chose to ignore it. What good would it do to acknowledge Jades sudden new found faith? Davey knew hed tried for years but just couldnt fall in with the spiritual mumbo-jumbo of religion. It just didnt suit him. Any of them.

Davey looked away and decided he needed a few minutes to himself. Right now, he didnt want to be with his friends. Right now he needed a little alone time. He veered to the left and started down the beach a ways. He didnt go far, stopping just yards away and still within sight of his friends and the small fire Hunter and Adam had made in preparation for the oncoming darkness.

The last night. Their last night. Davey sighed and found and nice-looking patch of wild grass to sit on. But when he sat down, he found his body was tired from his and Jades swim. He laid back, resting his head on his laced fingers.

His moment of quiet didnt last long. Footsteps in the sound followed his exact same path, coming to stand beside him. Davey cracked open an eye and found, to his surprise, that it wasnt Jade but Hunter.

He took one last drink off his beer and tossed it over Daveys head, into the small wilderness of trees before the parking lot. He hooked both thumbs in belt hoops and stared down at Davey wordlessly.

Just come to stare? Davey asked, wondering what was on his friends mind. A lot, it seemed. One moment he was standing, the next he lay half on top of Davey, leg in between both of his, kissing Davey fiercely and with unbridled passion.

Dry, rough hands ran over slick, wet skin, peeling off sodden shirt and working diligently on tough, unyielding jeans. Davey froze at first, then remembered.

It was their last night on earth. Their last night together, the four of them. There would be no questions asked, no arguments between them. Anything goes tonight, that was the unspoken agreement between them all. That was the consequence that came from having their best friends with them when the world ended. Nothing came perfect.

So when Hunters tongue found its way into Daveys mouth, Davey allowed it and began running his hands through Hunters spiky blond hair. Hunter sighed and slowly began to press his hips again and again to Daveys. The sound of their clothes and heavy breathing didnt quite muffle the quiet, agonized whimper.

Daveys eyes opened to see Jade standing nearby, hand stifling any more sound out of his mouth, eyes tearing and expression full of shocked hurt. He stared down at them a moment longer, then turned and fled back to their campsite.

He should have felt at least a pang of guilt, but he didnt. This was their last night, and if Jade didnt remember that, that was his fault. Hed have to live with that for the rest of eternity then. But to Davey and Hunter, it was just one last thing before the end. One thing they hadnt done as friends.

Hunter shifted and Davey saw that his eyes were open and watching him. He had known Jade was there, then, and intentionally ignored him. Was this some kind of twisted game to get Jade riled up? Or did he simply not care? Davey thought it must be the latter, since Hunter continued to grind his hips against Daveys, arousal apparent if only hardly felt through their pants.

He moved his mouth off of Daveys to suckle his neck as he humped fiercely on top.  Davey, despite his normal feelings, couldnt help but feel the soft echo of Hunters orgasm as he finally came with a low moan into his ear. Hunters lips kissed his throat and his hands reached down to briefly squeeze him through his wet jeans. Davey grunted appreciatively. Hunter heard this and returned to give his friend a quick handjob, eyes watching Daveys expression carefully as he came.

Youre so fucking gorgeous, Hunter whispered now, slowing his hand down as Daveys last whimper died away, so fucking beautiful. Ive always thought so. Im glad we got to do this before. . . he stopped and removed his hand, suddenly sobering. He pulled back, up and off. He didnt give Davey a backward glance as he walked off to grab another beer.

Davey let a weary sob wrack through him. He lay there with his fly open and his shirt pushed up on his stomach and he cried. He cried not for Hunter leaving him after what theyd done. No, he was rather glad Hunter had left before Davey could push him away.

He cried because no matter what happened tonight, this was the end. There was no tomorrow for any of them. There was no morning, no afternoon, no next week. This was the end, the last night, ever.

Without realizing what he was doing, Davey stood and began walking back to the ocean. Along the way he began peeking off clothes until he stood in front of the last sliver of sun, bare as the day he was born.

Somewhere to his right, he could hear Jades sobs and Adams drunken and clumsy attempts to cheer him up. But none of that mattered now. Davey smiled, remembering all of the best memories he had of his friends, all their good times and all their bad times. He stood there, eyes closed, not seeing the last of the sun disappear forever and the end of the end starting to begin.
