The Scarboroughs
then & now
Introduction
According to legend & early records, the Skarthi family left what is now
Norway in 874 A.D. to sail to Iceland. They were reputed to be the first
permanent settlers of this island. A part of this family left Iceland in 965
A.D. to settle in what is now known as Scarborough, England and from there to
London, England.
William Scarborough was born about 1560. Most researchers claim Isaac
Scarborough is the progenitor of our line. However, there is no proof of this
claim, which is based on the story that John Scarborough born 1667 brought a
chest to America which bore the initials I.S in brass nails on its lid and the
fact that the same name Isaac is so commonly used in our line.
There are also said to be letters from John in Pennsylvania, History; soc.,
Archives which mention Isaac. It seems that John was used more than Isaac.
Marilyn L. Winton, a Scarborough researcher, points out that J and I were formed
the same way, in Old English. The proof that William and Agnes Farrar
Scarborough are our ancestors, appeared in the Scarborough/Haworth newsletter in
1994 and in August, 1996. Records were examined by Marilyn L. Winton on
microfilm in Bedfordshire, England, of Wolburn Parish; records 1558-1653.
Microfilm record was # P18/1/1. One source that says William was the son of John
Scarborough born about 1520. I am not sure if this information was on the
microfilm records that were examined by Mrs. Winton.
Name and address of submitter:
Bonnie (Scarberry) Hayes
Microfilm records were: #P18/1/1. His will was probated 24 Sept. 1616.
Notes: William's name was spelled "Skarborowe" in his Will ,29th August of
1616. The words in the will were badly misspelled which was written by Peter
King, probably some relation to William's daughter-in-law, Agnes King
Scarborough. This is his will as translated by Marilyn L Winton from microfilm
ASP/W 1616/86 at the Bedfordshire Records Office, County Hall, Bedfordshire,
England.

WILLIAM SCARBORWE
Peter King writer and witnasse
It appears that administration of the will was given to WilliamHuckell
(son-in-law,
husband of the daughter Alice) due to the minority of Robert and William
Scarborowe.
(Robert was 18 and William 16, almost 17, in the year 1616.)
Note: the ii was used by the writer instead of the word two. The spelling and
grammar skills
of the writer Peter King, were not outstanding, but there was perhaps no one
else
available at short notice.

Toward the close of the seventeenth century, William Penn, and other members
of the
Society of Friends (Quakers) in England, were being persecuted because of their
religion.
Our line of Scarborough's may never have landed upon American land if it wasn't
for
this leader. They wanted to live in peace and freedom. Penn persuaded King
Charles II
to allow them to set up a colony in America. This colony was the state of
Pennsylvania.
Friends were also called Quakers, because they looked upon all fellowmen as
equal in
the sight of God. All persons were therefore "friends". They questioned the need
for any minister; instead, they depended upon each man's conscience for
direction
in manners and morals. As no one man was entitled to more respect than any other
man,
the Quakers refused to follow the custom of taking their hats off to anyone.
This even included the King and Governor.
John Scarborough the first was a Quaker and friend of Penn. Both came to
America,
probably on the ship "Welcome", a vessel owned by Penn that landed 8th November,
1682.
He came to a place near Langhorne, in Bucks county, Pa., where he bought 250
acres from
Penn, 3 July, 1682 for 5 pounds. The deed was acknowledged by William Penn and
was
recorded 2 Feb., 1690 in Doylestown, Pa. in book 2, Pg. 10. In England, John was
a
Blacksmith, Whitesmith and Coachmaker. John brought with him his son John
Scarborough II,
a lad of only fifteen years.
In 1684, William Penn and John the elder went back to England. John returned
to
fetch his wife Sarah, but she was not a Quaker and wanted nothing to do with
America.
Some say that she was afraid of the Ocean trip but whatever the reason, John
chose
to stay with her back in England and lived there until his death 21 August,
1706. He was
buried in the Burnhill Fields burying grounds, London, England. He signed a
Power
of Attorney 15 Oct. 1696 to his son John the second. This document was written
and
signed in the presence of William Penn and William Penn II was one of the
witnesses.
