Chapter 7 (cont)
A more indirect effect of these items were what it told others, namely other mages, for they were also greatly tied to personality traits.  If a mage acquired a staff, the powers of nature, it often meant they were minimalist and very wise, and often somewhat stubborn.  If given a pendant, a mage was generally more materialistic, but thought complex situations through better than others.  If the ring was acquired, which it rarely was, ring bearers represented a more aggressive side of magic, slow to learn, but when tested, their magic was rarely beaten by a mage from another class, they were often firm rooted in their beliefs, but nowhere near as stubborn as those who wielded the staff.
Vekia herself was curious as to which item Kitt would receive.  While mages were forbidden more than one apprentice in a lifetime, a mages school was established, and Vekia spent a good part of the Third Cycle in the school, and it had always been fairly easy to tell which items would be gifted to which students, nine times of ten had she been correct.  The students personalities had made it painfully obvious.  But with Kitt, no such qualities appeared.  She was completely baffled, and would probably be more surprised than Kitt would be at what he got.  He had shown equal amounts of interest in all manners of spell, but his personality was also far more balanced amongst the three stereotypes.  It would be for her an eye opening experience.
Kitt, she said, do you have a personal effect of yours on hand?
Of course, answered Kitt, I always have this with me, and he drew from his shirt a small wooden dragon.
Oh, yesyour fathers dragon, Vekia said sheepishly.  She was a bit shy on the subject.  No one knew who Kitts father was.  Kitts mother had died this past winter, when a fever epidemic hit Shimmer Peak.  But while she was alive, she had always been silent on the topic, always saying Maybe another time whenever Vekia inquired about Kitts birth.  The only thing Kitt had of his fathers was a small wooden dragon, his mother had given it to him when he was a small boy.  It was magnificently carved, one might even mistake it for a real dragon, that is, if it didnt fit into the palm of a child.  Kitt never spoke of his father, a trait inherited from his mother.  When she died, Kitt grew even closer to Jublis and Vekia, they became his new family.  Kitt never spoke of his mother either, leaving her to memory, having not mentioned her since her funeral.  Vekia attempted to be lighter hearted about it, It will work perfectly.
What do I do with it? asked Kitt.
Simply place it on the top of the pyramid, Vekia said motioning to the structure.  Kitt reached out and placed the dragon on top of the pyramid.  If fit almost perfectly, standing straight up inside the little gap between the three legs of wood that made up the frame there.  It proved to be quite easy as the structure was almost as tall as he was.
   Now what do I do?
Now the spell reads your essence, and from that it shall determine what accessory you deserve, said Vekia.      The tiny dragon began to glow even as she concluded her statement, a bright blue like the sky.  As Kitt watched, the glow spread down the wooden frame, until the entire structure glowed that same blue as the dragon.  Now Kitt, remove the dragon, whispered Vekia as she raised her arms.  She saw Kitt looking curiously at her, Normally you would do this, but since you are not prepared, I am taking the burden of keeping the spell enhanced.
Wont that contaminate my essence or however it is to determine the accessory? asked Kitt.
Do not worry, Vekia assured him, I can contain my own spirit from my magic, it will be fine.
Contain her spirit? Kitt thought to himself, she always taught me that spirit energy was what gave a mage their power.  Can she honestly be that powerful?  But Kitt decided to trust in his master, and cautiously removed the little wooden dragon from its niche.  He looked back to Vekia, and saw her hair blowing back, almost as if a wind was coming from the pyramid, but he felt no such force.
Now, she said in deep concentration, desperately trying to do as she had told Kitt she was performing, One side of the pyramid will begin to glow, go to that side, and summon your accessory.
Summon it? Kitt asked, How will I do that?  What does she expect? Im not as advanced as I should be for this, nowhere near that kind of level.
Just do what feels natural, was all Vekia needed to say, still in concentration.  Then, focusing her attention fully to the spell, she recited an ancient incantaion, Aer em nor lyli ma do.  Rino-deia! small ties of lighting emerged from Vekias fingertips, tying her to the pyramid.
Kitt looked to the structure in question, and saw the face in front of him seal over with a purple-pinkish light, like the energy just poured from the top where the dragon used to be.  Scattered throughout it were little specks of white energy, like this one giant flat piece of lightning, and the specks appeared and disappeared rapidly, like sparks from a fire.  The low hum from this field also was comforting somehow.
Just as Kitt was to raise his arm to summon his accessory, a slight feeling jarred him.  Something didnt feel quite right to him.  But this was the side, he would take it or leave it, and it was far better to take.  He shook his head to ward off the feeling, to no avail.  He grit his teeth and went ahead to summon the item, though it was against his better judgment.  He began to raise his hand again, but as he brought it in front of the face, he saw through to another of the sides.  What?  Whats going on? he thought to himself.  He gaped in amazement as a second side sealed over with energy, the same as the first, transparent energy like the one before him, but this one was a bright green.  No sooner had the second side finished when the third side, same as the others, sealed over with a bright orange energy.  Ma-master, what do I do? asked Kitt, barely able to stammer out words at this point.
Vekia herself was barely able to concentrate, never had this even happened, let alone having experience with it.  With no other options this far into the spell, she decided to trust Kitts instincts. Do as you feel you must.  Choose a side.
