WINTER SONGS & POEMS

Sensory

Add snow and ice if available.
Ice cubes, colored or plain.
Cottonballs, pinecones, leafless twigs.
Snow and magnifying glasses

If snow is available put on table with eyedropper.
Put foodcolored water in several small containers.

Make white Playdough. (leave out food coloring)

White Silly Putty:
Mix 1 cup liquid starch.
2 cups white glue.
Stir for a long time until it jells.

Winter Math

Winter Dominoes:
Cut out 30 small squares of white tagboard.
Draw a black line throught middle of each.
Place a winter sticker on each side.
Kids can match the pictures in a game of dominoes.

Dot-to-Dot Snowperson:
Make a dot-to-dot snowperson.
Those children who recognize numbers
can trace in numerical order.
Make simple dot-to-dot of winter clothes also.

Mitten Number Match:
Cut out several mittens from different colored construction paper.
Put a number on one side and matching number of dots on the other.
Make another set with matching colors for easier matching.

Winter puzzels:
Paste a winter picture on a poster board.
Cut out in pieces and laminate if possible.
Sizes depend upon the age of the children.

Social Studies

The Travel Book:
Make a book using construction paper for the binder,
and plain paper sheets attached to center.
Help children find pictures of children dressed
in warm clothes from different countries.
Have them paste on the inside pages and discuss the countries.

The Winter Book:
Make each child a homemade book. Label the pages:
"What I wear in winter"
"What I do outside in winter"
"What I do inside in winter"
"My favorite winter food"
"My favorite winter tree"
Have them find their own pictures to glue inside.

Find pictures of winter ways to travel,
Sleds, snowshoes, skis, etc...
If possible bring the real thing in the class room.

Arts & Crafts

Ice Cube Painting:
Stick a popsicle stick in each section of an icecube tray.
Freeze. Sprinkle dry tempera paint on paper.
Kids rub icecubes along paper.

Cottonball Snowman:
Have kids trace three different sizes of circles
on black construction paper. Cut out circles.
Glue cottonballs on paper. Teach small, medium, and large.

Windowpane Frost:
Draw outline of window on construction paper.
Spread glue around the frame and sprinkle with glitter.

Winter Mobile:
Find pictures of winter and cut out.
Attach to yarn and tie to a thin (leafless) branch.

Winter Games

Ice-skating Race:
Give two children pieces of wax paper.
Fasten wax paper to shoes with rubberbands.
Place pieces of different colored paper to a wall.
Children must "skate" to the color everyone else decides on.
Take turns.

Who Has The Mitten?:
Children all sit in a circle. One child in the middle.
Use a very small mitten for a baby.
Have the kids make passing motions even if they don't have the mitten.
As they pass the mitten, and pretend to pass the mitten, chant this verse:
I pass the mitten from me to you,
I pass the mitten it's fun to do.
I pass the mitten round and round,
Can you guess who has it now?

Winter Cooking Activity

Banana Snowpeople:
2 cups raisins
2 bananas
Shredded coconut

Chop the bananas and raisins in a blender.
Place them in a mixing bowl.
Refrigerate until mix is cool enough to shape.
Roll mixture into balls and then into coconut.
Stack balls on top of each other.
If children are old enough use toothpicks to hold together.

Hot chocolate:
Use water or milk to instant hot chocolate. Mix and heat.
