Math

Draw or cut out several pictures of different nursery
rhymes and mount on tag board.
If possible laminate and cut each picture into five to
seven pieces. The children can match nursery rhyme puzzle pieces.

Use nursery rhymes for rote counting practice.
Example:
1, 2 buckle my shoe
3, 4 shut the door
5, 6 pick up sticks
7, 8 lay them straight
9, 10 a big fat hen.

Matching:
Draw from 1 to 10 simple figures from a nursery rhyme
on the left side of a sheet of tag board ( mittens, candlesticks, etc...)
Put the corresponding numerals on the right side.
Laminate and have the children use washable markers to
draw lines from numeral to matching picture.

Mitten Matching:
Collect several pairs of mittens and have children match.

Science

Have a Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater tasting party.

Draw a large Hickory Dickory Dock clock on cardboard.
Move the hands on the clock to see if children can identify the numerals.

Match pieces of wool fabric mounted on cardboard.

Dramatic Play

Set up a puppet theater and play out nursery rhymes.

Add certain props to play area for each nursery rhyme
such as red cape for Little Red Riding Hood etc...
Tip: add a stip of brown paper and tape so kids can pretend
to be the wolf by taping on a tail.
Each nursery rhyme is easy to find a prop to role play.
Read rhyme and show props before playtime.

Arts & Crafts

Spider Webs:
Cut circles of black paper to fit in the bottom of a pie tin.
Mix thin silver or white tempera paint.
Place a marble in pie tin with a teaspoon or two of paint.
Roll marble around to create spider web and dry on flat surface.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star:
Using hard cardboard cutouts of stars have children
trace around on heavy construction paper.
Decorate with sequins or glitter.
Cut out and hang from ceiling.

Little Boy Blue's Horn:
Collect paper towel tubes.
Paint blue with tempera paint and dry.
Cover one end with tissue paper and secure with a rubberband.

Circle Games

Jack Be Nimble Jack Be Quick:
Set an unlit candle in a candle holder in the middle of the circle.
Have children jump over the candle while everyone chants this:
Jack be nimble.
Jack be quick.
Jack jump over the candlestick.

Humpty Dumpty:
Place large blocks near circle.
Each child gets a turn to add a block to the circle
to make a wall. Chant the rhyme as wall goes up and
every one lean back when wall falls.

Old Mother Hubbard's Doggie Bone Game:
Save a real bone and soak in bleach for a week or
cut one out from a piece of cardboard.
One child sits in middle with the bone in front of him
and his eyes shut. Have one of the children in the circle
quietly get the bone and hide behide him.
Child in the middle tries to quess who has it.

Cooking Activity

Bran Muffins:
3 cups whole wheat bran cereal
1 cup boiling water
1/2 cup shortening or oil
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups unbleached flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups buttermilk

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
Put paper baking cups in muffin tins.
Combine cereal and boiling water in large bowl.
Stir in oil and eggs. Add remaining ingredients.
Blend well and spoon batter into cups about 3/4 full.
Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes until done.
