FISH SONGS & POEMS

Science

Aquarium:
Set up an aquarium on the science table.
Take kids to the pet store and purchase a fish.
Have a chart with names so kids can rotate turns to feed.
Also set a book concerning fish on the table for children to explore.

Place a balance scale and bowls filled with aquarium rocks.
Also add measuring spoons and cups for pouring.

Personal Aquarium:
Gather small plastic coke bottles, one per child.
Fill with water, add 2 tablespoons of oil per bottle.
Add a small plastic fish per bottle.
Tape cap on with duct tape to secure.

Sand Types:
Bring in sand box sand and real beach sand.
Comapare and use sifters to play in.

Taste salt water and pure water.
Try town water, well water and bottled water.
Discuss the different tastes.

Fishy Math

Sorting Fish:
Purchase an assortment of small plastic fish.
Or you make them out of poster board.
Sort by size, color and shape.

Cut out 5 to 10 fish from poster board ranging in size
from smallest to largest. Mix them up and let children sort.
Older children can measure them using rulers and tape measures.

Dramatic Play

Scuba Diving:
Provide children with flippers and diving mask.
If you live near the beach you might have access
to a small diving suit.
Lay a blue towel, sheet or rug on the floor for water.

Bait & Tackel Shop:
See if a local fishing shop will donate
a small variety of the plastic worms.
They are coated with oil and feel great.
Add small baskets and pails. Play fishing rods etc...

Play Fishing:
Set up a tub of water in the room.
Use with play fishing poles.
In dress up area add life vests, hats,
nets and tackel boxes.

Arts & Crafts

Fish Washes:
Give children white paper and a variety of crayons
to draw fish. Then have them spread a thin layer of
blue water color. Hang and dry.

Fish Sponge Painting:
Cut different colored sponges into shapes of fish.
Pour a thin layer of paint into a shallow dish.
Attach a wooden clothes hanger to back of sponges.
Have children dip into paint and print on paper.

Fishy Games

Go Fish!:
Cut several fish shapes out of different colored construction paper.
Attach a paper clip to each fish shape.
Tie a string to a small rod with a magnet on the end.
Each child gets a turn to catch a fish then catch another the same color.
After they get the fish they add them to a bucket and name the color.

Fishy Cooking Activities

Fish Tasting Party:
Prepare several different cooked fish. Broiled, baked, fried, etc...
Compare the looks and taste of each.

Fish In A Boat:
Cook fishsticks according to directions.
Lay on leaf of lettuce. Squirt small amounts of catsup
outside of the lettuce leaf as sea sponges.

Blue Cool Tartar Sauce:
1/2 cup mayo or salad dressing
1 tablespoon pickel relish
1/2 teaspoon grated onion
Blue food coloring

Mix blue coloring with mayo.
Mix everything else with blue mayo.
