BLUE SONGS & POEMS

Sensory

Fill water table with blue water using food coloring.
Variations: Fill a bucket, fill a tub, fill a plastic pool
or just fill the sink.

Make Blue Goop:
Mix blue food coloring
1 cup cornstarch
1 cup water

Blue Math

Let children put a blue sticker on every blue object they can find.
Give them a pad and blue pen to catalog the stickers.
Each time they see a blue sticker have them put one blue mark on the pad.
Children that are counting already can help the others count.

Place a scale on the table and weigh 1 pint of blueberries
and 1 pint of grapes.
Make a poster to show which one was heavier.

Blue Eyes:
Make an eye color chart on poster board with
3 big sets of eyes at the top. Blue, Brown and Green.
Chart the children's eye colors by recording their
names under their color. Then add the number under each list.

Blue Science

Making Blue:
Give each child a plastic cup and blue food coloring.
Encourage them to add one drop at a time.
Observe how the water changes from light blue to a darker shade.
Tell them light blue is sometimes called baby blue.

The Blue Outside:
Cut blue cellophane paper to fit some windows at home or school.
Provide a safe foot stool for children to use.
Discuss how things look different all in blue.
Compare to the real color of the sky.
You can also cover the lens of your binoculars with cellophane.

The Blue Inside:
Cut blue cellophane paper to fit a wide pair of plastic glasses.
Tape around the edges to secure.
Take turns using to inspect things in the room.
You can also make your own color paddles with stiff tagboard
and blue overhead transparency sheets.
Make two forms for the paddles and slip the blue paper between.
Secure edges with duct tape. Can be used to inspect things in the room.

Dramatic Play

Paint Store:
Provide many prompts such as paintbrushes,
buckets, paint sample tags and books.
You can wrap old potato chip cans with different colors.
Add a toy cash register and just for fun
make blue pretend money to reinforce colors.

Arts & Crafts

Blue Painting:
Cut sponges into circles, squares, triangles
and rectangles. Dip into dark blue paint and
and use on light blue paper.

Use the easel or hang paper on a fence.
Provide dark blue paint and white paint.
Discuss what has happened as the colors blend.
Remember shades and tints as vocabulary.

Fingerpaint with blue paint and big paper.
After child has painted fold paper over
to create a blue bug picture.

Blue Crayon Project:
Have children grate blue crayons with a leather glove on.
This will protect their fingers.
Place the shreddings on one piece of wax paper,
cover with another and iron until they melt.
Adult must do ironing and supervise the grating.

Blue Circle Games

Bluebird, Bluebird:
Have the children hold hands in a circle.
Make one necklace out of yarn with a little
bluebird cut out of paper attached to the end.
Choose one child to start and let them wear the necklace.
This child weaves in and out of the other children's
arms as you all sing this:

Bluebird, bluebird through my window
Bluebird, bluebird through my window
Bluebird, bluebird through my window
Who will be the next bluebird?

At this time the child takes the necklace off
and chooses who will wear it next.
Make sure everyone gets a turn.

Play I Spy:
Teacher says, "I spy something blue
sitting on the chair by the door."

Older children who know their colors
like to play the part of the teacher.

Blue Cooking Activity

Blueberry Muffins:
2 tablespoons sugar
1 3/4 cups flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoons salt
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup salad oil

Mix all ingredients.
Add 2 tablespoons sugar to 1 cup frozen
or fresh blueberries.
Mix slightly and gently fold into batter.
Bake at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes.

Cream Cheese and Crackers:
Tint cream cheese with blue food coloring.
Have plastic knives so kids can spread on crackers.

Blue Cupcakes:
Add blue food coloring to white cake mix.
Let kids fill their own paper cup cake holder.
Follow directions on cake mix to bake.
