A booklet clarifying the Koguryo Kingdom was part of the history of Korea has been published in four languages.

Roughly 35 different kingdoms ceased to exist in the area covering contemporary China in the 705 years of the Koguryo Period (B.C.18-668).

With clear counter-evidence to some Chinese scholars claims that the kingdom was a merely a provincial government of Chinese dynasties, the Korean government has had a hard time dealing with the dispute, with limited sources to promote the truth out of the country.

Under the circumstances, the Institute of Koguryo Studies, a research organization specializing in the era, chose to publish a booklet on Koguryo in four different languages _ English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

With virtually no budget set for such a study, some of the nations leading business corporations such as KTF and Samsung, have financed its research and publication. Hearing about the institute and its efforts to promote the kingdoms true history, ordinary citizens, including students, also offered to help.

The 20-page booklet contains 35 color photos of the historic relics of Koguryo in both Korea and China, as well as maps of the kingdom. A total of 200,000 copies (100,000 in English; 30,000 in Japanese; 20,000 in Chinese and 50,000 in Korean) will soon be distributed to foreign embassies in Korea, airports and tourist information centers in Seoul.

An international discussion forum on the Koguryo Kingdom, hosted by the institute last June, provided valuable sources for its research to publish the brochure.

The book describes how and why Chinese scholars began to use different approaches to the study since the early 1980s. By doing that, it pointed out that the entire territory of Koguryo in China went under the rule of ethnic Chinese only after the Second World War.

Former president of the Institute of Koguryo Studies and professor of economy at Seokyeong University So Gil-su wrote the majority of the books contents and took most of the photos as well. For further information about the brochure, call the institute at (02) 337-1661
