UM vs. the Gables: A SoFla fued
The relationship between college and town has always, to one degree or another, tenuous. UM is no exception with some concerned citizens of Coral Gables trying to block new construction on the university's main campus. Now the city commission has "reluctantly" delayed a hearing before the CG planning and zoning commission on proposed changes to UM's Master Plan.
The university says that all it wants is to be "heard before the commission," a move the campus newspaper is 100% behind. But some columnists remain somewhat skeptical saying that the college has less sway since its students do no vote in local elections. However, as Monday's article points out, the university has threatened to secede from the city if it does not get what its hearing.
UM is, of course, never going to secede from CG, it is far to vain to withdraw from one of its main selling points. Besides where would they secede to? I highly doubt that they would "lower" themselves enough to join South Miami or worse Unincorporated-Dade when CG is a much more prestigious sounding location for a top tier research college.
