Re-editing the classics

I’ve spent the past few weeks assembling a portfolio of my writing that I can send out to prospective colleges. Of course, this means that I have to carefully edit\re-edit these pieces to their best effect – removing errors and overly colorful text. It’s not that its hard work or anything, but it does feel more than a bit awkward at times.

Naturally, any piece that was already published is assumed to already be edited and was put in immediately (including the boldfaced, lime colored lede). However, I have a half-dozen articles that never made the mag, and it is these pieces I have spent most of my time on (like “You Can’t Go Home Again” about the 1st annual Anthracite Heritage Festival held on Memorial Day of this year).

I have no doubt that I can do it.Kevin Alexander (Boston magazine), whose writing style is very similar to my own, is midway through his MFA at Emerson College (which he chronicles in a monthly column for Writer’s Digest). Heck, if he can do it…
