When the 'Slang' album was first released, Def Leppard's dynamic frontman Joe Elliott couldn't say enough about it. "The whole idea was to go in and make a whole album from the heart..." "Check out Pearl of Euphoria, Gift Of Flesh, All I Want Is Everything, they're just things that are a lot more human..." "For us, it was a massive step from the previous record..." "We didn't want to do 'Hysteria II'." Okay, so if he really and truly believed all that, how did he arrive at the point where all he has to say about it now is "it was something we had to do"? As if he felt he had to justify it somehow, if not outright apologize for it. I loved 'Slang' from the first time I heard it. It's the only Def Leppard album I own that I don't skip tracks on. Actually, it's one of three albums in total that I don't skip tracks on. Ever. So why the sudden change of heart, Joe?
'Slang' is everything Joe Elliott promised us it would be, and more. it's an honest, refreshing break from the Mutt Lange Overproduction we've become accustomed to hearing. This album is both dynamic in concept and distinctive in sound, yet it is undeniably Def Leppard. It's an 80's rock icon coming into the 90's in a way that only a band like Def Leppard could. I liked the ways it was both complex and simple, I loved the honesty (and as Scully would say, chutzpah) of a band able to release an album that was recorded outside the confines of a commercial recording studio. Mostly, I liked that it was done unapologetically. This is us in a new age, take it or leave it. Or rather, it was unapologetic. And being that I have been a Leppardite for more than twenty years, I feel justified in wondering about the change of attitude towards this album, and hoping that it isn't just because it didn't live up to the multi-million dollar standards set by Hysteria.
The Live In Singapore CD is amazing in a way, because it gave me a whole new perspective on the 'Hysteria' album. I never truly appreciated some of these songs until I heard the acoustic versions of them. The only thing I don't like about it is the same thing I dislike about ALL live recordings - the damn audience! |
