This was the first JLT I ever owned, mostly because it was the only one I could find in the entire city of Calgary. Apparently, he and/or his management company don't see Canada as a viable market. Or something like that.
Actually, up until I bought the Stuart Smith 'Heaven And Earth' CD up at Rockfest in July of '99 at Nisku, I wasn't exactly sure who Joe Lynn Turner was. I knew the name, of course, but I have to admit I was never much of a Deep Purple or Rainbow fan, that was more my brother's thing than mine. Now I kind of wonder what I missed.
Regardless, having heard him on the Stuart Smith session, I was intrigued enough to go searching for more. What I found, after calling every music store in the city, was this album. And it was a special import at that.
'Nothing's Changed' is somewhat mellower than most of Turner's music, but that in no way detracts from it. The voice this man has is absolutely stunning. Pure magic. From the upbeat, ass-kicking rock and roll ("Knock Knock", "Baby's Got A Habit") to the soul-searing ballads ("Promise Of Love", "Let Me Love you Again"), he is one of the best I've ever heard, and this is an album that can bring a smile or drive you to tears. Turner also contributes to the writing of all but three tracks on the CD, and serves as producer along with Al Pitrelli.
Since I bought 'Nothing's Changed', getting my hands on more of JLT has become somewhat of an obsession. So far I've managed to pick up three others, but the one I really want remains elusive. On CD, that is: I found it on vinyl in a second-hand record store in Calgary. Now if only I hadn't tossed my old record player out... |
